Will genetically modified crops pollute the land

Transgenic plants have been in public debate since they came out. First of all, we should know what a transgenic plant is.

The planting of transgenic plants will not lead to soil pollution and abandonment, on the contrary, it can also help to repair the polluted land. For example, researchers have developed a transgenic poplar that can express mammalian P450 enzyme, which can metabolize toxic chemicals. After planting transgenic poplars in chemically polluted land, the researchers found that compared with traditional poplars, the ability of transgenic poplars to metabolize pollutants such as trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and benzene was significantly enhanced. This result shows that transgenic plants have great potential in improving polluted soil and ecological restoration.

Compared with traditional plants, transgenic plants have stronger pollutant absorption ability, stronger volatilization ability, stronger branch transfer ability, stronger fixation ability, absorption ability and root filtration ability, so transgenic plants will have more advantages in repairing polluted land.

At the same time, in recent years, China has formulated a series of laws and regulations on the cultivation and management of genetically modified plants, and the legal system of genetically modified plants is becoming more and more perfect. Therefore, the planting of transgenic plants in China needs to pass strict scientific evaluation and abide by corresponding laws and regulations, which provides a layer of guarantee for the ecological security of transgenic plants. There is no evidence at home and abroad that planting transgenic plants will bring ecological risks. Therefore, so far, transgenic plants that have been widely used in the world have high ecological safety.
