What are the animal's instincts?
1. Camels: long periods of time without food and water.
These desert animals are highly resistant to drugs because they can survive for more than 10 days without drinking fluids. In addition, their huge humps store enough fat to last a month without food. They can accumulate up to 36 kilograms in them! Therefore, if an animal runs out of food and begins to consume this fat, it may reduce its hump until the skin on its flanks slackens.
But it's not just about these animals. In addition, they have a double chamber for storing water in the stomach, which helps to overcome prolonged drought in the desert. Camels have other features that allow them to resist for so long even without water, and they regulate their body temperature and urinate very little so as not to waste the fluids needed to resist the heat.
2. Polar bears: a strong protective coat.
This animal is considered highly resistant because it has a protective skin and a layer of fat up to 10 centimeters high, thus allowing it to survive in the cold regions of the Arctic. The latter provides heat and insulation against low ambient temperatures. In addition, its fur looks white, but in reality, it is transparent and the skin underneath is dense and black.
During the summer months, when access to food is reduced, these bears have the ability to metabolize nutrients from the seal blubber they ingested during the winter, thus providing them with vital nutrients for energy and survival.
3. Forest frogs: the ability to freeze themselves.
Scientists have also studied forest frogs, or wood frogs, for their ability to freeze themselves and survive as solids at temperatures as low as -20°C. The frogs are also known for their ability to freeze themselves. To protect themselves against the cold weather of North America in winter, they freeze their blood, but have the ability to prevent ice from damaging their cells by concentrating glucose (which acts as an antifreeze) in the cytosol.
After six months, when the temperature rises, they thaw the heart first, thus rejuvenating the circulation and preventing damage to other organs during thawing. Not only because of its resistance, but also because of the potential medical applications it may have, the species is being closely studied by scientists today.
4. Galapagos Giant Tortoises: Extremely Long Lifespan and Tenacity
These giant turtles are considered one of the world's longest-lived vertebrates, as they can survive for about 100 years or more. Since they settled in the Galapagos Islands, they have had to deal with a variety of unfavorable environmental conditions, such as high temperatures in Ecuador, lack of food, changes in volcanoes and sea levels, and other threats. Even so, the species is highly resistant and flexible when it comes to adapting to its environment in order to survive.
Another characteristic they possess is that they can survive for months without food or water, which is why they were in great demand by pirates in the 18th century, who stored them as food in their cellars.
