History of Zhou Gongguan
The exact date of construction of the Zhou Mansion is not known, but it is generally believed that it was built between 1912 and 1936, with a brick and wood structure, a French (or Spanish) garden house, originally owned by French merchants in China.
In May 1946, according to the "Double Ten" agreement, Zhou Enlai led a delegation of Chinese **** to Nanjing to negotiate with the Kuomintang, and in June, the delegation decided to set up an office in Shanghai, for which the house was rented, but the Kuomintang authorities did not allow the hanging of the "Delegation of the Chinese **** in Shanghai Office" sign. June 18, from Nanjing to Shanghai, Dong Biwu decisive decision: "do not let the office, called 'Zhou Gongkuan'." To this day, the Chinese and English door plate hangs in front of the door reads "Zhou Gongguan, Residence of General--ChouEnlai".
On Nov. 19, 1946, Zhou Enlai returned to Yan'an, and Dong Biwu took full charge of all the work of the Shanghai Office of the Chinese **** Delegation.
On November 30, 1946, the Shanghai Liaison Office of the C*** Delegation and the Shanghai Office of the Xinhua Daily jointly hosted a banquet at the Zhou Mansion to celebrate Zhu De's 60th birthday. Invited to the banquet were Zhang Bojun, Shi Liang, Liu Yazi and Wang Shaoqiao.
On March 1, 1947, the Kuomintang authorities blockaded the Zhou Gongguan, Dong Biwu calmly presided over the last party branch meeting and set up various tasks before withdrawing. March 5, 1947, the Chinese **** in Shanghai was forced to leave Shanghai to Nanjing, March 7, led by Dong Biwu returned to Yan'an with the personnel in Nanjing. On March 19, Shen Junru, on behalf of the NLD, went to the Zhou Gongguan in Shanghai to go through the formalities of escrowing the properties of the C*** delegation with the Kuomintang authorities. on October 25, the Zhou Gongguan and other places in Shanghai under the escrow of the NLD were inspected by the police officers. on October 30, the Shanghai Police Department sent officers to accept the properties of the C*** in Shanghai under the escrow of the NLD.
June 5, 1981, Deng Yingchao and other leaders of the Central Committee of China **** to visit the old site, according to Deng Yingchao's recollections, the original restoration of the third floor of the east room of Zhou Enlai's office and bedroom, moved to the east room on the first floor.
On March 5, 1982, the memorial hall was opened to the public, and on September 1, 1986, it was officially opened to the public.
On the morning of June 24, 2011, the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Democratic League held a ceremony to mark the opening of the "Traditional Education Base of the China Democratic League (Shanghai)" in the Zhou Mansion in Shanghai.
