What is drama?

"Drama" is an ancient Greek word, which means "behavior" or "action". Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher, used this term in a very influential book Poetics. In this article, Aristotle classifies different forms of poetry according to the basic characteristics that he thinks can be universally recognized in poetry creation. He used the term "drama" to describe the poetic works that were "performed" to the audience in the theater.

Although Aristotle used drama as a general term to describe the poetic form of performance, he identified different types of works in this category, including comedy and tragedy. He thinks comedy is a form of drama because it shows the behavior that makes the audience laugh, and he thinks tragedy is a form of drama because it shows the behavior that makes the audience feel pity or fear. Horace, a Roman theorist, put forward another view of these poetic forms. He believed that the purpose of these forms was either pleasure or teaching. Although in addition to Aristotle's initial evaluation of drama, we must also consider the various definitions and development of drama, but many classification and terminology he introduced are still in use or debate today.

This is the most classic definition of drama.
