Edward Shapiro, referred to as Shapiro for short, is recognized by academic circles as the most accomplished master of China studies in the world at the end of19th century and the beginning of 20th century, and is a "European sinologist". 1907 came to China for the second time, and spent ten months in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Shanxi and other provinces in the northeast and north China, buying a lot of books and taking a lot of photos.

The following photos were taken at 1907 in Zouxian County, Shandong Province, giving us a chance to see the Meng Temple and Meng Mu Forest in Zouxian County a hundred years ago, which is really commendable.

Zouxian County is now called Zoucheng, which is called "Zoucheng" for short and "Zou Lu Holy Land" in ancient times. It is located in the southwest of Shandong Province, bordering Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, in the north and Tengzhou in the south. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it was the capital of Zou, and it was also called "the Holy Land of Zou Lu" with Lu, and it was a place where culture flourished.

Zoucheng is the hometown of Mencius, a great thinker, educator and representative of Confucianism during the Warring States Period. Known as "hometown of Confucius and Mencius, birthplace of culture", "hometown of oriental gentlemen, hometown of Zou Lu sages", it is a national historical and cultural city.

Meng Mu Forest is the graveyard of Mencius' parents. Later generations became famous for Mencius, largely because Meng Mu moved his godson three times, so this woodland was called "Meng Mu Forest". After the death of Mencius, his son Yi Jie was buried here. Covering an area of 38 hectares, surrounded by stone walls, there are about 65438+3000 trees and several stone tablets in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. The whole cemetery covers an area of 578 mu, with Maanshan in the west. The mountains are covered with junipers. The ancient trees are lush and there are many graves in the forest. There is a pleasure hall on the east side of the tomb. The largest Cooper Garden in the world.

Meng Mu forest

After entering the forest, the end of Shinto is the Appreciation Hall, surrounded by red walls, with three rooms and four eaves, with a length of10m and a width of 6m. In the northeast of the tomb is the tomb of the forty-fifth generation ancestors of Meng. The original monument was built in the fourth year of Yuan to Shun (1333), and it was engraved with a "lineage map". This monument no longer exists today. I wonder if the tablet in the photo is this tablet.

Mengmiao (Mengmiao)

Meng Temple, also known as Yasheng Temple, is located at No.44 Yashengfu Street, Zoucheng City. It is a place where Mencius, a thinker of the Warring States Period, was worshipped in past dynasties. The Mengmiao Temple was built in the fourth year of the Northern Song Dynasty (1037), covering an area of 43,600 square meters.

Meng Temple was built in the fourth year of Northern Song Dynasty (1037). After staying in Yanzhou, Daofu Kong, the grandson of Confucius for forty-five generations, visited the tomb of Mencius at the foot of the Four Seasons Mountain in the northeast of the city, and founded the Mencius Temple next to it.

In the third year of Xuanhe in the Northern Song Dynasty (1 12 1), Yi Shi Xu Maohe and his fellow villagers moved the Meng Temple. The expansion and maintenance of the Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties was handed down in the fifty-fourth year of Kangxi (17 15).

The Meng Temple is rectangular and has five courtyards. It is 458.5 meters long from north to south and 95 meters wide from east to west. It covers an area of 43,600 square meters, accounting for 66 mu. The building complex is divided into three roads: East, Middle and West, with the Confucius Temple as the main building and the north and south as the central axis, which are symmetrically arranged left and right. ? There are 64 halls in the courtyard, including Asia Hall, Kai Hall, Meng Mu Hall and Zhiyan Hall, and there are more than 350 stone tablets.
