The Application of Rolling Tune in Chaozhou Opera

Chaozhou opera belongs to the high-pitched system, which is called Qupai system. Chaozhou Opera usually uses four kinds of materials: Qupai, the rolling tune (also called rolling board), the Han folk minor (also called minor) and the words (or lyrics), but Qupai is the most distinctive one. From the above music materials, a word "Chao" is formed, that is, the aria of Chaozhou opera music. Qupai, commonly known as brand, is the general name of various songs such as Nanbei Qu, Xiaoqu and Shidiao since Yuan and Ming Dynasties. Qupai has its own proper name, and there are dozens of popular Chaozhou operas. Each qupai has its own fixed tune, singing method, syntax, number of words and melody. The formation of this traditional qupai is formed through long-term processing and tempering. The fundamental reason why these tunes can be widely circulated and the people are so familiar with and loved is that they reflect the people's thoughts and emotions in a concentrated and general way, and deeply express the people's voices through simple and easy-to-understand music language, thus generating emotional voices among the people.

Chaozhou percussion is inseparable from Chaozhou opera. Percussion music in Chaozhou opera has local characteristics. The shapes of gongs and drums are unique and diverse. Each instrument has undergone strict tuning and percussion, which is pleasing to the ear and expressive. It can be mixed with arias and strings, and is called "three strands of rope" by predecessors. The three move in parallel at the same time and cancel each other out. Most gongs and drums are made of Qupai, which adds a lot of luster to promoting the plot and creating an atmosphere. Without the spleen, gongs and drums are greatly reduced.

Qupai, as an integral part of the whole art of traditional Chinese opera, must obey the requirements of the script, give full play to its specialty around the development of the content and plot of the script, especially the ideological activities of the characters, portray and reveal the inner world of the characters, and achieve the purpose of shaping the personality. The vocals of many traditional operas in Chaozhou Opera are worthy of our study, research and reference. Naturally, future generations should not blindly imitate their predecessors, but boldly create new tunes and tunes on the premise of inheritance to adapt to the new personality on the stage.
