Disadvantages of Chain Measurement in Civil Engineering

Chain surveying in civil engineering is a traditional method of measuring the length, distance, height, depth and other parameters of a feature by means of a thin chain (or steel belt) on a steel coil. Although chain measurement has some advantages in some simple measurement scenarios, it still has some drawbacks compared to modern measurement methods:

1. Not automated enough: chain measurement needs to manually lay the chain to the measurement target, and reading the measurement results needs to be manually calculated, which makes the whole process of measurement time-consuming and requires more manpower to participate.

2. Lower accuracy: Due to the influence of the chain's own stretching, swinging and other factors, as well as human error in reading, the accuracy of chain measurement is lower. For a large number of measurement tasks with high accuracy requirements, the use of modern measuring instruments is more reliable and accurate.

3. High requirements for terrain: chain measurement is required to measure on the feature, the height and zigzag degree of the terrain has certain requirements. If the measurement object is not easy to reach or the terrain is complex, it is not very suitable for chain measurement.

4. Need more manpower: Chain measurement needs to pull people dozens of meters of steel rolls, need more manpower to cooperate with the operation, the measurement efficiency is relatively low.
