The Tibetans have their own language and script. The Tibetan language belongs to the Tibetan branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family of the Sino-Tibetan language family and is divided into three dialects: Zang, Kang, and Amdo, and is written, while Gyaltsen Tibetan is rarely seen as a dialect without writing. The current Tibetan script is a phonetic script developed in the early 7th century based on ancient Sanskrit and Western scripts. The use of the Tibetan script has strengthened the economic ties between the Tibetans and the central plains.

Tibetan literature is rich and colorful, including writer's literature and folklore, and ranks among the top of China's ethnic minorities in terms of quantity. The Tale of King Gesar, a folk rap heroic epic, is the longest known rap epic in the world; and the Tibetan literary classic Cangyangjiazuo's Love Songs has become world-famous.

The Tibetan calendar is a Tibetan calendar created by Tibetan ancestors, which is different from the Han Chinese calendar and has a history of more than 1,000 years. The Tibetan calendar has three major elements, including the physical calendar inherent in Tibetan culture, the time wheel calendar introduced from India, and the time constitutional calendar introduced by the Han Chinese. It is one of the most valuable folk cultures in Tibetan culture. The earliest known Tibetan calendar appeared in the 13th century (Yuan Dynasty), and in the 19th century, the compilation of Tibetan calendars has been perfected.

The history of the Tibetan people is an integral part of Chinese history, and is one of the oldest ethnic groups in China and South Asia.
