What exactly is "fugue"?

Fu is a kind of rhyming style in ancient China, between poetry and prose, similar to the later prose poetry. It emphasizes elegance and rhythm, and has the characteristics of both poetry and prose. It is characterized by "spreading and writing, writing about things", focusing on writing scenery and expressing emotions through scenery. The earliest appeared in the prose of the sons, called "short fu"; Qu Yuan as the representative of the "tao style" is the transition from poetry to fugue, called "tao fugue"; the Han Dynasty formally established the style of fugue, called Rhetoric Fu"; after Wei and Jin Dynasties, it was called "Parallel Fu"; in Tang Dynasty, it was called "Rhythmic Fu"; in Song Dynasty, it was called "Literary Fu" because it was written in the form of prose. The Song Dynasty wrote fugu in the form of prose, called "literary fugu". Famous fugu include: Du Mu's Afang Palace Fugu, Cao Zhi's Luoshen Fugu, Ouyang Xiu's Autumn Sound Fugu, Su Shi's Former Red Cliff Fugu, etc. [1]? [1]?

Although for modern people, Fu is far less popular than poems, essays and novels. But in ancient times, especially in the Han and Tang dynasties, poetry and fugue are often mentioned side by side, from Cao Pi's "poetry and fugue want to be beautiful" and Lu Ji's "poetry and love and beautiful, fugue body and Liu Liang" can be a glimpse of the beginning. Fu was born in the Warring States, flourished in the Han and Tang dynasties, declined in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. During the Han and Tang dynasties, there were literati who only wrote fu but not poetry, but there were almost no talented people who only wrote poetry but not fu. After Jian'an and even throughout the Six Dynasties period, the fugue was more highly regarded than the poem. In the Records of the Grand Historian (史记), the works of Qu Yuan (屈原) were called fu, and in the Book of Han (汉书), the works of Qu Yuan (屈原) and others were called fu. Later generations, because of their respect for the Shiji and the Hanshu, called the works of Qu Yuan and others fugu. Fu is one of the most representative literary styles of the Han Dynasty that can best show the spirit of the times. It is a new style of literature which is synthesized on the basis of the tradition of "Poetry Classic" and "Chu Rhetoric" and the relevant factors of the Warring States' vertical and horizontal style and the works of the pre-Qin sages. Together with the poetry of the Han Dynasty, it accomplished the splendor and brilliance of Han Dynasty literature.
