Although China people have a long tradition of eating sheep, it is inseparable from Xuzhou's regional culture to eat mutton and drink large bowls of mutton soup in dog days and develop this custom into a grand festival with the participation of the whole people. No matter from the geographical location or the climate environment, Xuzhou embodies the distinct characteristics of the north-south border zone, and its customs, traditions and cultural atmosphere are also influenced by the same and eclectic factors in the north and south. Taking food culture as an example, the braised sauce flavor of Qilu cuisine and the spicy and delicious flavor of Sichuan cuisine are all reflected in Xuzhou's diet. Generally speaking, Xuzhou cuisine has five flavors, mainly salty and fresh. Therefore, for Xuzhou people, sheep is absolutely delicious, and the smell of mutton that people usually try their best to get rid of when cooking mutton is the embodiment of "freshness" in Xuzhou people's view. Local people cook mutton and mutton soup with a large pot of clear water, and finally add a few simple seasonings, and the peppers can be eaten. Although the rice made in this way is not exquisite, it is delicious, economical and enjoyable to eat. The simple folk customs and generous and informal character make the local people adapt to and like to eat Fu Yang, and the custom of eating meat and soup in a big bowl in hot summer has been preserved.

The local historical and cultural traditions of Xuzhou are also worth mentioning. Thousands of years ago, Peng Zu, who paid attention to diet and health, was full of praise for mutton; Later, Liu Bangxi, Emperor Gaozu of Pei County, ate mutton. According to Historical Records, Liu Bang killed sheep and gave a banquet when he was young. In addition, Xuzhou is one of the areas with the largest number of stone reliefs unearthed in the Han Dynasty. On a "kitchen map" unearthed in Hanwang Town, Tongshan County, there is a picture of a chef cooking food with mutton. On the one hand, Fuyang Festival in Xuzhou is a logical inheritance of local ancestors' dietary traditions, on the other hand, it also expresses a kind of nostalgia for ancestors and yearning for the rhyme of ancient Han Dynasty, which is a historical precipitation and a bearing of national feelings.
