What's the Difference Between an Automatic and Continuously Variable Transmission
Continuously variable transmission is also known as CVT. From the outside alone, CVTs and automatics are very similar, both using inline gears.
If disassembled and viewed from the inside, the biggest difference between the two is in the transmission chain, the transmission chain of the automatic is a gear set of gears, so it can sometimes be obvious to feel the stutter when you are driving in normal times.
While the CVT is not a gear set transmission, the CVT uses a steel transmission chain, so it can transmit strong power when shifting, and minimize power loss and wear as well as noise while bursting out with high torque.
