Pei Chi and His Painting-Deng Fuxing

Pei Chi and I are both from Gu 'an, Hebei Province, and are fellow villagers. His studio is only one stop away from the art garden where I live, and it is also a neighbor. There is a sense of closeness when looking at his paintings.

Pei Chi is an honest man, peaceful, modest, gentle and taciturn. I think there is an innate concession and shyness in his character. He is in great contrast with those half-tone painters who are pretentious, high-spirited, boastful and even arrogant. In some people's eyes, people like him are out of date, too simple and honest and even pedantic to "keep pace with the times".

Perhaps because of this, Pei Chi also adopted an "honest" attitude in painting. He started from tradition, studied hard, buried himself in calligraphy and forgot to eat or sleep. After several decades, it can be said that Mo Chi has been buried in a pen and 3,000 paintings have been abandoned. It can be seen that his paintings are not ostentatious, but are practicing real kung fu and moving forward step by step on the rugged mountain road.

Today, traditional flower-and-bird painting has been pushed to the peak by several modern masters. It's really hard to innovate again. Starting from tradition, such as Pei Chi, on the one hand, there is something to rely on and learn from, on the other hand, it is difficult to break through and innovate at the end of their tether. In the eyes of peers, everyone knows its origin. If we blindly "borrow the past" instead of "open the present", it will be mediocre. Therefore, we should also fight traditionally. It's hard to get in, especially hard to get out. It seems that Pei Chi's choice of this artistic path is solid, relying on both talent and skill, and it is a late bloomer, unlike those extremely clever people, who bypass the tradition a little further and find another way to produce results at once and make a name for themselves as soon as possible.

In recent years, the themes of Pei Chi's paintings include pomegranate, wisteria, peony, grape, camellia, persimmon, magnolia, plum, bamboo, fruits and vegetables. Among them, lotus and lilac are the most, and they have more personality. The Dutch series of works are rich in ink and lifelike, drawing a personal face with a common theme in flower-and-bird painting. Lilacs are difficult to express, and not every flower and bird painter dares to care. In Pei Chi's pen, the lilacs with uniform density, beauty and elegance are vividly on the paper, with new ideas and novel ideas.

On the other hand, everything has two sides. After entering the tradition, once you type again, it is really amazing. Infiltrated in traditional paintings accumulated for thousands of years, once it reaches the temperature, it will undergo a qualitative change. Between brush strokes and ink drops, there is a certain meaning of traditional culture, which is understandable but difficult to describe. Moreover, it also shows the artist's distinctive artistic style, which can be called "borrowing the past to open up the present". In the meantime, it is conceivable how much effort this loyal and dutiful painter has made. Then, people will sigh with emotion: you see, honest people draw pictures is the right way, and honest people don't suffer! Because art does not violate dialectics of nature.

We expect Pei Chi's works to arouse more people's emotions.
