The most scientific way to memorize words

--Reprint

How can I memorize so many words? The most important point is: ... If you want to be more successful than others, you must take shortcuts. Don't expect yourself to be luckier than others, or to be smarter or more diligent than others. Intellectually, in terms of opportunity, you and others are not that far apart, and if you want to outperform people who are similar to you, you must take shortcuts, shortcuts, shortcuts!

The first of the shortcuts to memorizing words is: make sure you memorize a lot every time. Because they are not smarter than others, so after memorizing the words, others forget one-fifth, they will never forget less than others. However, while others memorize ten words a day, one can memorize one hundred, forget one-fifth, and still have eighty left, ten times as many as others in their smartest state. One hundred per day is the minimum. In fact, later you will find that this requirement is not too high, after a month, you may naturally memorize three hundred or five hundred.

These one hundred should be divided into four groups, thirty in the morning, ten at noon, thirty in the afternoon, and thirty in the evening. The next morning, review the words that you have not memorized before. When memorizing, take a look at ten words (note that it's ten and not more or less), and don't memorize them seriously because there's no time for seriousness. Read the pronunciation of each word while watching, or read silently. Recall them after reading, and read them again if you can't recall them. The purpose of this memorization is to leave a general impression, so that the next time you see it, you will know the word, so memorize until you can recall most of the words, and then copy out the rest of the words separately.

The second shortcut to memorizing words is to memorize the dictionary! Why memorize the dictionary? Because dictionaries have more comprehensive explanations for each word, and words that start with the same letter are grouped together. Not all dictionaries can be used to memorize, you must find a dictionary that contains only the words you want to memorize. Also, it's best to have explanations and example sentences. Also, make sure there are phonetic symbols! The vocabulary lists at the back of the textbook are usually for good students who pay attention to the class, so don't memorize those if you want to take shortcuts.

Memorizing the dictionary, according to the beginning of the letter (Z,Y,X,Q,J,K,U) (V,W,N,O,L) (FG,IT,HM,BDE,R) (C,P,S,A) in order to memorize, in which the C,P,S,A each have to be divided into three parts of the memorization. There are several advantages to memorizing in this way: (a) it increases the sense of accomplishment and interest. As to why, you will understand if you look up the dictionary. (b) It is easy to know which words have been memorized and which have not. (c) The most basic words can be mastered first.

There are three levels in the 30,000 words: 3,000 to 4,000, 8,000 to 10,000, and 22,000 to 30,000. That means you have to prepare three separate dictionaries. Each of these levels has very different characteristics from each other, so you need to memorize them separately in different ways. I didn't recognize this at the time, so I took a detour between 10,000 and 30,000 and wasted some time, otherwise I might have been able to break through to 50,000, I think.

So there are three branches of the shortcut to memorize words:

The third shortcut to memorize words is: meet with the words more often. A word can be memorized or not, depends on the frequency of meeting with it in different occasions, not the length of time looking at it each time (the same law is also suitable for picking up MM). Generally speaking, if you want to memorize a word, you need to meet with it three to four times a week in "different occasions". I mentioned above a lot of memorization, do not key a word to remember or not is the meaning. It doesn't matter if it's love at first sight or not, the key is to have more different types of meetings. However, depending on the level of the word to be memorized, there are different ways to increase the chances of meeting.

The first branch: blind listening! The class of three thousand to four thousand are very commonly used words, and include almost everything needed to express the most basic ideas. Eighty percent of every text is made up of these words, and they are the most basic morphemes (or "root words"), the smallest things that can't be divided up any further and that have little similarity to each other. The best way to deal with these words is to do a lot of uninterrupted, simple elementary listening practice. Since there are twenty percent of other words in the reading material, you won't be able to read the reading material with this level of words alone. But the listening exercises are basic conversations, and the pronunciation is generally very standard, more listening can increase the repetition rate of words, and can be for the future memorization of 8,000 to 10,000 that level of words to lay the foundation for the phonetics.

Listening is divided into two parts: intensive listening and extensive listening. The first part of the listening is to understand every word, and the second part is to listen to the words. The most important thing to do is to listen to the words in general, because the speed and intonation of the language, as well as the overall impression is to rely on the general listening. And these are the basis for memorizing 8,000 to 10,000 level words. Listening to the words you often use (that is, those most necessary to master the words) to wear your ears, so that you can vaguely hear a sound to respond to what it means. The words you hear in generalized listening are the words you should really remember, so don't be afraid of not understanding anything when you listen carefully. What is generalized listening? Generalized listening means that when you listen, your mind should be distracted, and you should listen while doing other things (for example, preparing a meal or discussing a meal with someone else out loud~). Pan-listening must be done on sight and at every opportunity, preferably with headphones in your ears.

The point of intensive listening is to find the words you didn't hear. Aha, that's the words you've memorized but aren't familiar with. Keep those words in a separate place, so they don't get mixed up with the words you haven't memorized. Listen to what you've already heard in the hard listening. For example, if you listened to the second tape in the intensive listening, then listen to the first tape in the extensive listening. A word of caution, do not take the English radio as your own listening material!!!!

... The second branch: binge-watching! The level of eight to ten thousand basically contains the remaining twenty percent. These words are hard to find in a listening textbook. But don't stop listening, because listening reinforces your sense of intonation, which is a key to memorizing words at this level. However, to memorize words at this level, you need to add reading to listening.

Looking is also divided into intensive reading and extensive reading. Just as with listening, it is the generalized reading that is more important. The general reading should pick not too long, can have the patience to read the article, and do not understand too many words, an article has two or three do not know enough. Never come up to read English newspapers and magazines, novels, those things are not only difficult to understand, and understand it is not much to promote the memorization of vocabulary.

The general reading also requires a lot of practice, as long as you have the patience and enough time, just keep reading! Don't read carefully, just scan and understand the general meaning, then mark the words you don't understand, don't think about what it means, keep scanning! After you've read them all, go back and look at the words again. Some of them may have already come to mind, some .... Don't remember? Then look it up in the dictionary, if you haven't memorized it yet, throw it away, if you have, copy it down separately, and put it with the words you didn't hear in the listening exercises.

The third branch: gibberish! This is only suitable for memorizing twenty-two to thirty thousand words. Because the other words have already been memorized without having to say them. And this level of words in the reading material is very little, may read ten articles but not a word of this level. So relying on reading to increase the chances of meeting is no longer an option. Some foreigners have never even seen these words in their lives, so how can they be expected to write them? Especially the GRE vocabulary words, such as "dress a horse", "New York hoodlums", "winds blowing from Africa to southern Europe" .... These words are rhetorically sophisticated, which means you can pass for a scholar if they're in your vocabulary.

The average foreigner can't understand what you're saying, so you can convey the same meaning without using these words. Well, here's your chance to bring these words into your conversation with foreigners, and then proudly pretend to be humble by explaining the meaning of these words to them.

Explaining one or two words at a time will be enough, and the foreigner will be so impressed that he or she will be able to admire you for it! Be bold but patient and especially bold.

At this stage, you should stop practicing your listening because you won't make much progress if you do. Remember the quote at the beginning? You have to take shortcuts to succeed.

Any action that doesn't result in great progress in a short period of time is not something to waste time doing.

However, this is where the reading material becomes a problem: you'll find that what you've read in the past feels too shallow and uninteresting, and that you can't read anything else that's deep. You'll also find a new and interesting phenomenon: the text you want to read is now full of words from the first level, each of which you know exactly what it means, but the whole text you just can't understand. Q

What should you read then? Just read the second level of the light articles. It's easy, but it helps you not forget what you've memorized in the past. As for the articles you don't understand, don't worry, you'll get it when you talk to foreigners more often, they're just phrases, slang or grammar.

The fourth shortcut to memorizing words is: associate, associate, associate, ..... What's the first action of memorizing a word? Examine its appearance. And the second and third action? Look at its connotations and pronunciation. And the fourth action would be to associate, and associate again .....

Associate it with any other memorized words that are similar in appearance? Pronounced similarly? Similar or opposite meanings? If so, quickly write it down next to it, and add the word next to those other words as well. In this way, when you see other words in the future, you will be reminded of this word, which is equivalent to adding another opportunity to meet.

And in the second and third levels of vocabulary, there are many words that are made up of prefixes, roots, and suffixes, such as "re," "in," "pseud," and suffixes like "re," "in," "pseud," and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseud" and "pseudo. and suffixes like "er", "a", "oid"... and then **** together to form a new word. If you know these prefixes and suffixes, you can easily guess what a new word means. Also, there are a lot of words that are pronounced similarly that have similar meanings, which is more common in slang, poetry, and children's terms. If you memorize 80 words a day, you can only memorize 2,400 words in a month, but after mastering these rules, you can actually memorize faster and faster, and you can know almost 10,000 words without memorizing them.

However, there are a lot of GRE words that are neither related to other words nor have prefixes or suffixes, and seem both simple and impossible to memorize. There are Greek, Italian, German, Latin, and even Japanese transliterations in these words. This will have to be mastered by explaining it to someone else. (HL must be careful!)

The fifth of the shortcuts to memorizing words is: review! It is a very normal law that if you remember fast, you forget fast. In the process of memorizing words, review becomes very important. I summarize the law of review is: ten words review once, then thirty words, and then all the previous words not memorized. When reviewing, the same do not have to key, roughly sweep once can be, but must think of its pronunciation (because the English is like sound). The last words you can't memorize must not be commonly used, because foreigners can't memorize them as well.

Every time you memorize a word with an initial letter, review the one with the previous initial letter. Then for every beginning letter you memorize inside the parentheses in the previous text, review the one in the previous parentheses. When reviewing, look at the English translation of the Chinese meaning to come once, and then look at the Chinese to think of its English word again.

As I said earlier, the words that I forgot in the pan-listening and pan-reading should be written down separately from the words that I couldn't remember when I memorized them, in order to treat them differently when reviewing. The words you forget should be looked at once a day and crossed out when you know them, while the words you can't remember should be memorized separately after you have memorized the whole alphabet, and you don't need to look at them normally.

1. After learning English for more than ten years, I am still mute in the end, is there something wrong with the traditional English learning method?

Not exactly. For people like me, who were born before the 1980s, learning English started with the letters A, B, and C, memorizing words, learning grammar, and reading texts and doing exercises as the main means of learning English, and there was a serious lack of training in listening and speaking. In fact, no traditional English teacher would think that listening and speaking are not important and do not need to be practiced more, but due to the limited economic strength of our country at that time, teachers and equipment were not enough, so it was difficult to popularize the teaching of listening and speaking in primary and secondary schools. In the college entrance examination in English, we can't set up a speaking and listening test, because it is too unfair to the students in poor areas. What can be done to widen the achievement gap to achieve the purpose of selecting students without an oral listening test? We can only rely on some not-so-practical difficult questions, biased questions or even strange questions. Higher education resources are very scarce, test-oriented education is unavoidable, students have to invest a lot of time to do exercises, dead key some of the details that are not very useful, learn to become a test English, which is no way out of the matter. When it comes to university, due to the limited number of teachers, oral teaching cannot be fully carried out, and there are not many opportunities to speak English at all. After learning English for more than ten years, in the end is still mute English is because not enough to speak, not enough to listen, and even not enough to read, rather than the traditional emphasis on the basics of grammar and vocabulary, emphasizing the reading ability of the English language learning method is problematic.

Happily the situation is now much improved. The college entrance exams, as well as the middle school exams in some provinces, have listening tests, and in many of the more developed cities, elementary school are able to hire foreign teachers for oral English instruction.

2. Must we abandon Chinglish (Chinese English) altogether?

It is of course the ideal of all English learners to abandon Chinglish and speak standard American or British English. In fact, the so-called Chinglish can be divided into two kinds of situations, one of which refers to the use of Chinese grammar and vocabulary to rigidly apply to English, for example, when you want to express "The day is very hot", and the other refers to the problem of accent, that is, although it is not the case, it is not the case that you can't speak English. Another case is the accent problem, which means that although you speak correctly, you can tell that it is a Chinese person who is speaking English. When we learn English, of course, the first situation must be absolutely avoided (this is not very difficult to do through the systematic study of grammar and vocabulary), otherwise people will not understand or find it ridiculous. To overcome the second problem requires so much time that it is by no means affordable for non-English majors living in China. Consider that many southerners have been in Beijing for decades, starting in their teens, speaking and listening to Mandarin every day, and still can't speak it! It is not easy for Chinese people to speak authentic American English without a language environment! Even if it is an English announcer from CCTV, you can still hear that it is a Chinese person speaking English. Some English teaching experts through years of crazy learning English (I'm afraid the time spent reading a college English major are more than), coupled with personal talent, a mouthful of pure American spoken English, threw out a certain English learning method calls for everyone to desperately practicing the muscles to pursue the standard pronunciation, in fact, the majority of people can not afford to be as invested as he was, and naturally, very few people have learned. In fact, as long as one is grammatically correct and uses the right words, that is to say, one can express oneself correctly, a bad pronunciation (note that it is bad, not incorrect) is not a hindrance to communication at all. For example, Singapore and India are both countries where English is the first official language, and almost everyone speaks English. However, the English of Singaporeans has a distinct accent - they call themselves "Singlish"; the English of Indians sounds even worse to us, with their tongues flapping. But people from these two countries have no trouble communicating with the British and Americans - just because their spoken English is grammatically and vocabulary free. They have never had to strive for "pure Americanisms". Of course, speaking pure American makes you look good, but consider the price you have to pay, and it's not always possible.

All in all, it's important to pay attention to grammar and diction, but as for accent, if you can't be bothered to improve it, you might as well stick to Chinglish.

3. Is it really important to have a standard pronunciation?

This question has already been addressed above. What I would like to add here is that it is really important to pronounce each word correctly. If you say one word as another, or pronounce a word one syllable incorrectly, while it is true that sometimes the other person can infer what you are trying to say from the context, it can also often lead to misunderstandings or make it seem like you don't know what you are talking about. Mispronunciations of words are often more puzzling than errors in grammatical structure. The other side of pronunciation - the intonation of a sentence - is not very important. We know that a sentence, even if every word is pronounced correctly, the whole sentence will sound out of flavor, Chinglish. this is because of not mastering the correct intonation and the habit of alliteration, etc. But it doesn't matter, because this way you can get the correct intonation and the correct pronunciation. But it doesn't matter, because the foreigner will be able to understand the sentence. The foreigners' ability to listen to English is in fact very strong, just as many Cantonese speakers are not allowed to speak Mandarin, but the Beijingers can easily understand it, because the grammar and the correct wordings are correct.

In short, the pronunciation of words is important. For the 5,000 words that are commonly used in the spoken language, we should pronounce them one by one.

4.What is the most important thing to be skillful in oral communication in English?

Of course, vocabulary (including words and phrases) is the most crucial. In oral communication in English, on the one hand, it is necessary to be able to understand what the other person says, and on the other hand, it is necessary for the other person to be able to understand what he or she says. In both cases, vocabulary is the foundation.

First, let's talk about listening. When practicing listening, you often have this feeling: a word that you have not heard of or know but can not respond to, it will lead to the whole sentence can not understand. A few key sentences can't be understood, so the whole article can't be understood. So, if you don't have enough vocabulary, you can't listen. Moreover, your sensitivity to vocabulary and speed of response directly affect your listening level. If you have been memorizing words for a while, you will be surprised to find that your listening skills have improved a lot without much training.

And then there's the spoken word. The biggest obstacle for Chinese people to speak English is not the pronunciation, but the fact that they can't express themselves - they don't know how to say it, what words to use, and how to use them. For example, if you want to say "I like to eat chili peppers", what is the English word for "chili peppers"? I don't know. Then say, "I like to eat a spicy vegetable." But how do you say "spicy"? I still don't know, so I can't do it. Lack of vocabulary is the biggest barrier to speaking English at a human level. The real spoken English for communicating with people is not shopping, airport, post office, asking for directions, and so on. Even if you have practiced and pronounced these phrases well, you can't talk to foreigners about your work or chat with them. If you want to talk about work or chat with foreigners, you have to master a lot of specialized vocabulary, as well as vocabulary related to all aspects of social life. So, vocabulary is also the basis of speaking.

It's important to note that the vocabulary we're talking about here is not just words, but also phrases and phrases. Words and phrases are very important in speaking. Sometimes we can hear every word in an entire sentence, but still don't understand the meaning of the sentence because we don't recognize the phrases that appear in the sentence. Much of the meaning of the spoken word is accomplished with phrases, and it would be very hard to say it with words that mean the same thing.

5. Is it really possible to speak without learning grammar or memorizing words?

Of course not. Some methods of learning English call for abandoning grammar and starting with memorized sentences for the simple reason that "young children never need to worry about grammar to learn how to speak. The reasoning is simply that "young children never need to worry about grammar to learn to speak. In fact, it is because of the limited intelligence of young children and the fact that they can't start with grammar that they learn language very slowly. Yes, it is very slow, and there is a factor of intelligence as well as the stupidity of the learning method. It takes about 3 years for a toddler to learn to speak at the age of about 1, and then at the age of about 4 to be able to speak decently in simple sentences, and not be able to read or write yet. And during those 3 years, they spend about 8-10 hours a day learning to talk - whenever someone talks to them, they are in a learning state. If an adult has the learning conditions of a toddler, i.e., assuming an adult is staying in the U.S. and has an English teacher with him at all times, teaching him immediately when he doesn't understand or can't speak, and correcting him when he speaks incorrectly, then in just four months he will be able to reach the language level of a 4 year old. Young children do not learn grammar, the rules of language can only rely on their own summarization, by the process of constantly being corrected to learn, so the efficiency is very low. For example, the baby said "no mom to work", the mother told him that he should say "mom do not go to work", he remembered, but after a while will say "no baby to eat", "no dad to sleep". He remembers, but a little while later he will say "no baby eat", "no daddy sleep", etc., and needs to be corrected many times before he can vaguely feel that the word "no" should not be put at the beginning of the sentence - this is because he doesn't know the grammar. Grammar is a summary of the laws of language, mastered, you can learn by example, less detours, which is a very simple reason. The method of memorizing sentences without learning grammar is simply putting the cart before the horse and treating adult intelligence as a stupid equivalent of that of a toddler. Before we go to elementary school, we naturally learn to speak, but we can only express simple requests and feelings, and we still can't say a lot of things. Thereafter, we still need five to six years of systematic study of elementary school language and six years of secondary school language before we can talk about all aspects of social life, fully and accurately express all kinds of feelings, explain the causes and consequences, the connection of things, and speak clearly about a complex matter. It can be seen that even the learning of mother tongue is a very comprehensive and long process, then learning English is certainly not as simple as memorizing sentences. Moreover, don't ignore the role of reading in speaking. We know that the more books you read, the more organized your speech is, the better your words are, and there is often a marked difference between those who have been to college and those who have not. The more books you read, the larger your vocabulary, the richer the expressions and techniques you learn, and so the stronger your language skills. Learning English by memorizing sentences, not learning grammar, not memorizing words, not reading, can only reach the language level of a 5 year old child abroad, which is fine for daily life, but not for work and communication. The reason why this kind of learning method can have a market now is only because it is against the tradition and caters to the people's psychology of seeking new changes, but it can't stand the test of practice after all.

6. Is reading or listening the main purpose of English learning?

Traditional academics tend to think that English learning should be based on reading, on the grounds that after all, there are not many opportunities to listen to English, while the various popular commercial English learning methods emphasize listening and speaking, arguing that mute English is of little use. And I think that this question has different answers at different times. Before the reform and opening up, even if ordinary people could speak some English, they had no use for it. At that time, the purpose of English learning could only be reading-oriented - in order to read and understand English scientific and technological information, product manuals and so on. In the 1990s, foreign business and cultural exchanges have increased significantly, so if you can speak good English, there is no worry that you will not be able to put it to good use. And the better you speak English, the more opportunities to speak English, which in turn promotes the improvement of English. The usefulness of reading ability, on the other hand, has not increased significantly compared to the pre-reform and opening-up period. Therefore, in the first and middle of the 1990s, making listening and speaking as the main purpose of English learning would be very helpful to one's future. The situation is different today, when the Internet is highly popularized. More than 90% of the information on the Internet is in English, and the ability to read in English is no longer only useful for researchers to look up information, but also for the average person to access a great deal of information through the Internet that is not available in the Chinese world - whether it is news, technology, business or entertainment. At this point, the ability to read in English has become a means of broadening one's horizons, obtaining timely information, grasping opportunities, and even adding joy to one's life, and it can be useful every day. What's more, by reading a lot of English, you can also naturally improve your listening, speaking and writing skills - it's like "if you know the 300 verses of a Tang poem well, you'll be able to recite it even if you don't know how to write it".

So I think that today, the development of reading ability is even more important in English learning. If the reading ability reaches the level of fluency and practicality, and you enjoy browsing on English websites every day, then listening, speaking and writing can be accomplished with just a little training. If you have studied English for more than ten years and are still mute, it is not only because you have heard little, but also because you have read little! Think about how many English books you have read in full and how many English newspapers you have read! If you read a lot of books, you will be able to speak well and write well, and the same rule that applies to the Chinese language applies to the English language as well.

7. How do I learn English?

There is no quick fix. Start by memorizing words and learning grammar, memorize more, listen more, read more, and speak more.

Not only do you have to recognize the words, but you also have to listen to the tapes or look at the phonetic symbols to pronounce them correctly. Many words that are very commonly used in life, such as "pneumonia", "liver", "chili pepper" and so on, are not included in the vocabulary list of the fourth level of college English or similar intermediate level. You should also pay attention to collecting and memorizing the vocabulary, otherwise you will easily get stuck as soon as you open your mouth when you speak English. In addition, be sure to memorize the 400 to 500 phrases and word groups commonly used in spoken English. When you have mastered basic grammar and have a vocabulary of over 4,000 words, you can begin to memorize sentences, as well as classic recitation articles, so that you can memorize all kinds of typical expressions, and then they will come to the tip of your tongue when you use them without thinking about them. Remember, memorizing sentences is very important and effective, but of course it has to be based on a good knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Listening, choose a set of teaching materials, such as Step by Step, step by step learning. The listening material outside the textbook, from China Radio International (China Radio International, abbreviated as CRI) of the English broadcast as well, CRI also similar to the VOA slow English, which in many cities is FM radio, no noise, learning effect is far better than full of noise and even fluctuating VOA shortwave. Moreover, CRI's programs have far more content about China than VOA, covering all aspects of Chinese society, some of which are the things around you, which is very useful for chatting in the English corner or talking about China to foreigners when you have the chance. When I was in graduate school, I listened to CRI's bilingual music program Enjoy FM and News at a Glance every night while I was writing a program, and after a month, I could understand 80% of VOA's News at a Glance, up from 40%. So, if you jump from Special English to VOA News, found that the progress is very difficult, may wish to try CRI's Newscast, it is Chinese people broadcasting, the difficulty between Special English and VOA News, listen to a period of time, to have a certain foundation and then attack VOA News, you can get twice the result with half the effort.

Watch more English VCDs or DVDs, and if you don't understand more than 30% of what you hear, you should turn on the Chinese subtitles and listen to them. At first, you can't understand a word of it, but then you will be able to understand what the dialog is saying, and then you will be able to understand the movie without the subtitles. Don't try to understand 90% of the dialog, that's very difficult, most of the undergraduates who graduated from English majors can't do it.

Listening more is also very helpful in improving your speaking skills. Because people learn to speak, in fact, from other people's mouths, which is why local accents are passed down from generation to generation, and deaf people are often mute. If you listen to English for an hour every day, even if you don't speak a word of English, after six months, when you open your mouth, you will find that your pronunciation has improved a lot without realizing it. This is my personal experience. The first time I went to the English Corner at Renmin University, I obviously felt that I could not speak well, my mouth was dry and my tongue was stiff. When I went back for the second time after listening to CRI and VOA broadcasts for half a year, I was praised by several people for my good pronunciation, and I felt that my tongue was much more flexible, and that I could roll my tongue when I needed to, and that I could raise my tone when I needed to, and that I could pronounce everything with a nasal sound when I needed to. But in reality, I haven't spoken a word of English in the past six months!

What's missing in China is an English-speaking environment. So, go to an English corner often. Be sure to let go of your guts and speak up! There is nothing to be ashamed of. Try to find someone who speaks better than you do, and if you come across someone who is at the same level or worse, and you can't make any progress, find an excuse to end the conversation so that you don't have to learn from each other's mistakes. When you go to the English corner, you should not just go there without preparation, but you should combine it with your daily study. If you go to the English corner once a week, you should summarize the sentences, vocabulary and phrases that you have learned this week and try to use them in your conversations.

To create an English-speaking environment, you need to have English in your life every day. Even if you listen to English songs every day, you can effectively maintain the learning effect and consolidate the feeling of English. If you drive to and from work, you can listen to English tapes over and over again (you can't be too serious about it, so you won't get into a car accident), or if you're like me, you never turn off the radio and lock it to the CRI channel, and you start listening to it when you turn on the engine, and you keep listening to it until you get out of the car. If you take the bus, you can also buy a pocket radio and listen to the radio while waiting for the bus, although there are more interruptions. If you're on a bike or on foot, you can't do that, it's too unsafe.
