Eradicating the low-lifes! These three tech innovations are sending smartphones to the grave
Dial phones, pagers, fax machines - these communication devices were revolutionary inventions, but they're now almost extinct. Will the same be true of smartphones next?
Smartphones are the most widely used mobile technology in the U.S., with 77 percent of U.S. adults owning one as of 2018, according to the Pew Research Center. It has created fast and interconnected communication, allowing people to get in touch with friends and family in seconds. Even so, today's smartphones are destined to become obsolete.
Three technological innovations are already transforming the use of cell phones: augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistants. Currently, smartphones connect us to the world of AR, VR headsets, and voice assistant apps, making them an important conduit for these innovations. But as the software for these innovations develops and improves, the smartphone will become redundant, acting as a "technology gateway" to its own demise.
Given the rapid advances in AR, VR, and voice technology, the end of the smartphone may be fast approaching. It's no longer a question of if smartphones will go away, but when?
