The building also suffered setbacks during its construction. Superstitious feng shui practitioners in Hong Kong considered it inauspicious because the building's sharp-edged shape resembled a three-pronged knife that would cut away the delicate balance between yin and yang, spilling over to the neighbors corresponding to the sharp corners, which led to many voices of opposition. For this reason, the Hong Kong branch of the Bank of China and I.M. Pei spent a lot of time negotiating with the relevant departments of the British and Hong Kong authorities, which finally enabled the design and construction to proceed smoothly. In the end, in this implied battle between the two countries and two world-class masters in the same city, I.M. Pei prevailed with a perfect architectural shape, saving 1/3 of the steel, and a construction cost hundreds of millions of dollars cheaper than HSBC.
