We have recently discovered an interesting phenomenon, called Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE): A series of non-emissive molecules, such as tetraethylene (TPE) and hexaphenylthiazole and their derivatives, are effectively emitted through aggregation. This AIE effect greatly improves the fluorescence quantum yield of these molecules, up to three orders of magnitude, and changes them from weak fluorescent substances to strong luminescent substances. Because of their unique AIE characteristics, it has been found that these molecules can be used as chemical sensors, biological probes, stimulus-responsive nanomaterials and active layers for forming efficient organic light-emitting diodes. Among AIE fluorescent materials, TPE system has attracted much attention because of its easy preparation, easy functionalization, good light stability and high photoluminescence efficiency. seven
