Here's a tutorial for hand-knitting a Chinese knot:

Take a piece of red cord and make three loops, lining them up in a cross shape. The center ring presses down on the right ring, and then flip it so that the bottom two cords are flipped to the top.

Pass the last ring out and tighten the ring and cord outward. Just repeat the same method three times.
