Definition and classification of sculpture

Sculpture is a plastic art, a visual art of three-dimensional spatial image made by materials and means, which can be divided into wood carving, stone carving, clay sculpture, ice sculpture and sand sculpture.

1, wood carving

Wood carving has a long history. Most of the early themes were centered on religion. Besides carving religious idols, it is also used to decorate altars and religious places. In countries where wooden buildings are prevalent, woodcarving develops with buildings. Modern woodcarving styles are quite diverse, and artists like to express them in abstract forms. In addition, wood carving is also an important contributor to the invention of printing.

2. Stone carving

The area where stone carving develops is closely related to the stone producing area suitable for carving. In areas with developed stone production, stone carving has a long history. In the past, stone carvings were often used as garden decorations, doorway signs or mausoleum building decorations. Because the stone is thick, the carving details are not easily damaged by wind and rain, and the stone carving works are mainly carried out in the outdoor environment. The common stone carving material is marble.

3. clay sculpture

The material will be natural clay or modern synthetic sculpture mud, which can exist as an independent art form and can also assist other sculpture forms.

4. Ice sculpture

Ice sculpture is an art form with ice as the main material, which originated in France. Because of the variability and meltability of materials, ice sculpture presents many difficulties.

5. Sand sculpture

Originated in America, sand on the beach is used for sculpture. The most common thing is that children are building sand castles, but some artists take sand sculpture as their creative theme.
