China's Five Major Dramas

China's five major dramas are Huangmei Opera, Beijing Opera, Yue Opera, Henan Opera and Pingju Opera.

1 Huangmei Opera

Huangmei Opera, formerly known as Huangmeidiao and tea-picking opera, originated in Huangmei, Hubei Province and developed in Anqing, Anhui Province. Huangmei Opera is simple and fluent in singing, good at lively lyricism and rich in expressive force. The performance is simple and meticulous, and it is famous for its truthfulness and vividness. On May 20th, 2006, Huangmei Opera was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.

2. Peking Opera

Beijing Opera is a traditional drama centered on Beijing and spread all over China. Peking Opera, with Xipi and Huang Er as the main melody, accompanied by Huqin and gongs and drums, is known as the quintessence of China, ranking first among the three leading operas in China. Anhui Opera is the predecessor of Beijing Opera. Tan Xinpei and Mei Lanfang are the most representative Chinese Peking Opera performers.

3. Yue Opera

Yue Opera is known as the second national opera and "the most popular local opera". Originated in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province, originated in Shanghai, flourished in the whole country and spread all over the world. Yue Opera is good at lyric, mainly singing, with beautiful voice, real and moving performance, aesthetic and elegant. Jiangnan is very beautiful, with "talented people and beautiful women" as the main theme, and there are many artistic schools, among which thirteen are recognized. 4. Henan Opera

Henan Opera has been continuously inherited, reformed and innovated on the basis of Henan Bangzi. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Henan was called Henan Opera for short. Henan Opera is famous for its sonorous singing, moderate intonation, clear articulation, mellow charm, liveliness, flesh and blood, and being good at expressing the inner feelings of characters. Because its music accompaniment takes jujube bangzi as the beat, it was named Henan Bangzi in the early days.
