Among them, Du Liniang is the heroine in the Peony Pavilion by Tang Xianzu.
The Peony Pavilion depicts an official's daughter, Du Liniang, who fell asleep in the garden one day and fell in love with a young scholar in her dream. After waking up, she couldn't dream all day and died of depression. Before her death, Du Liniang sealed her portrait and buried it in the pavilion. Three years later, Liu Mengmei, a scholar from Lingnan, went to Beijing to take the exam, which coincided with the rebellion in the border state of Jin. Du Bao, his father, was ordered by the emperor to go to the front line to guard. Later, Liu Mengmei discovered the portrait of Du Liniang. Du Liniang turned into a ghost and found Liu Mengmei, and told him to dig a grave and open the coffin. Du Liniang came back to life. Later, Liu Mengmei took the exam and became the top student in high school. However, due to the delay of the war, Liu Mengmei, then a scholar, was entrusted by Du Liniang to find her husband Du Bao. Du Bao decided that the man was talking nonsense and immediately put him in prison. After learning that Liu Mengmei was the champion of the new department, Du Baocai let her go, but she never admitted that she was a son-in-law, and eventually made trouble in the Golden Temple.
