Four gods
The Four Gods, also known as the Four Elephants and the Four Spirits, namely the Dragon, the White Tiger, the Suzaku and the Xuanwu, are the favorite mascots of the ancient people in China. These four groups of animals are also the four gods in China's ancient mythology. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, due to the prevalence of the Five Elements Theory, the four elephants were also colored as Qinglong, Baihu, Suzaku and Xuanwu respectively. In the Han dynasty, the four elephants evolved into the gods believed by Taoism, so they were immediately called the four spirits. Another major manifestation of the four ancient gods in China lies in military affairs. During the Warring States period, there was a saying that "the former Suzaku was behind Xuanwu, and the left dragon was right and the white tiger was right", which was simply an orientation map.
The blue dragon represents wood.
White tiger, white, represents gold.
Suzaku, red, stands for fire.
Xuanwu is black, representing water.
Feng shui theory often says, "There is a dragon on the left, a white tiger on the right, suzaku in front and Xuanwu behind". It turns out that the orientation of the ancients was to sit facing south as the main architectural orientation, and so was the orientation of the capital. This involves the requirements of climate and environment, especially for temperate buildings to deal with sandstorms, strong winds and sunshine, it is best to sit north to south. Therefore, the orientation of "sitting north facing south" on the ground corresponds to the natural system, that is, "there is a dragon on the left, a white tiger on the right, Zhu Province in front, and Xuanwu in the back". This terrain forms a pattern of high mountains and distant mountains surrounding acupoints. Called "Four Gods Correspondence", it is the best layout for building yin houses and yang houses.
Ancient astronomy in China, centering on Polaris and Beidou constellation, divided the bright stars around into 28 groups called "Twenty-eight Nights", and then combined them into a big group every seven nights according to the distance of seats, and divided the stars into four big groups. For each large film of the Seven Nights, people use their imagination to draw an invisible dotted line, and when they are connected with the dotted line, they get four images of "dragon, white tiger, suzaku and Xuanwu", which are collectively called "four elephants" or "four gods" according to their unpredictable starlight. This layout is actually used to watch the stars and remember the distribution of the stars in the sky, reflecting the constellations in North China and Central China.
The "Four Gods" town house is a statement including Yin and Yang houses, which requires that heaven should correspond to the earth and heaven should protect the earth, thus forming the basic concept of Feng Shui. The name of "Four Gods" is a combination of four auspicious beasts transformed from astrology, which acts on any yin and yang family, not only in the sky, but also in any corner of the earth, and will interact with each other as long as there is space.
The "Four Gods" represent the four directions of east, west, north and south, and provide scientific reference for dividing the sky and making calendars. Later, with the popularity of the theory of yin-yang and five elements, people paid more attention to the role of the patron saint of the four gods and were endowed with higher divinity. 28 huts have also become objects of worship. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, the four gods matched the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, and the four colors of blue, white, red and black were systematically recorded in Huai Nan Zi, Historical Records and other documents at that time, which became a generally accepted ideological system.
rosefinch
Suzaku, also known as Suzaku, is the god of the South. It consists of seven birds: heart, ghost, willow, star, Zhang, wing and hibiscus. In Volume 44 of Emperor Huang Zhi and Zhai Yi, Zhu Cuixing of the Southern Dynasties said: "Su Jing Tianjing Xing Jun belongs to Su Tiankui Xing Jun, Liu Su Chutian Xing Jun, Xingsu Tianku Xingjun, Zhang Su Libra Xingjun, Yi Su Tian Xingjun, and Ji Su Tian Xingjun." As for its image, there are seven clouds in "The Collection of Jiao Tong's Needs": "Nan Zhu Cui, guide me from the length of birds, the change of Dan's points, the sound of blue thunder, the colorful colors and the six images of artifacts." At the same time, Taoism also uses it in alchemy. For example, Volume 72 of "Seven Chapters of Clouds" quoted the ancient classic "Four Gods Dan" and said: Zhu, the southern fire cinnabar, is also intended to turn into a dragon and a bird. Its qi rises to heaven, and its matrix is the ground, so it is the foundation of the Great Dan and flies when it sees fire.
Suzaku is not a phoenix. Also known as the three-legged god bird or the three-legged blackbird or blackbird is a three-legged crow. Suzaku is one of the four spirits. Like the other three, it comes from the stars. Zhu is red, like fire, and the south belongs to fire. Legend has it that in the vast East China Sea, there stands a sacred tree-Fusang, and ten three-legged owls perch on its branches. They are all sons of the oriental gods, and they travel in the sky in turn every day. Later, ten three-legged feet did not listen to the instructions of the eastern gods, and ten suns appeared in the sky at the same time. The earth is scorched by grass and scorched by heat. Humans are in danger of extinction. Di Jun gave Zhai a bow and an arrow to teach these sons. But these three-footed Wu didn't care about Hou Yi at all, so they tried to be brave together. Hou Yi was furious, drew his bow and arrow and aimed it three feet away. Shoot down nine tripods in a row. After the emperor ordered, the bird with only three legs wandered around every day without rest. It's different from the fairy birds in the west.
turtle
Xuanwu is a spiritual thing composed of turtles and snakes. Xuanwu originally meant Xuanming, and the ancient sounds of Wu and Ming are interlinked. Wu means black; Ghost means yin. At first, Xuan Ming described the tortoise divination as follows: the tortoise's back is black, and the tortoise divination is to invite the tortoise to ask his ancestors in the underworld, bring back the answers and show them to the world in the form of divination. Therefore, the earliest Xuanwu is the tortoise. Since then, the meaning of Xuanming has been expanding. Turtles live in rivers, lakes and seas (including turtles), so Xuan Ming became a water god; The tortoise lives long, and Xuan Ming has become a symbol of immortality; The first underworld was in the north. In the Yin and Shang Dynasties, Oracle Bone Inscriptions divined that "divination will point to the north", so Xuan Ming became a northern god again. Xuanwu, like the other three gods, is also derived from 28 stars in the world: Dousu, Niusu, Nvsu, Xu Su, Danger, Room and Wall.
White Tiger
In China, the white tiger is the god of war and war. Tigers have many magical powers, such as avoiding evil, praying and punishing evil, promoting good, getting rich and getting married, etc. And it is one of the four spirits, and of course it is also changed from the stars. Among these 28 stars, there are 7 in the west: osmium, building, stomach, ang, bi, Gou and Shen. Therefore, it is the representative of the west, and its whiteness is due to the west. The five elements belong to gold and the color is white. So it is called white tiger not because it is white, but because it comes from five elements.
In the eyes of the ancients, the tiger is a terrible thing and a respectable thing. The terrible thing is that it will eat people and animals. Respectably, it can ward off evil spirits because of its great power. In some ancient books, such as Ying Shao's Custom Yi Tong. Sacrifice in the Eastern Han Dynasty: "Draw a tiger on the door, ghosts dare not enter", "A tiger is a penis, and all animals are long. Can resist sharpness and eat ghosts. Today, people have to burn tiger skin to drink after they die. Beating its paws can also cure evil. This is also a fact. " The ancients also thought that the white tiger was an auspicious feeling:' virtue is a hundred birds and beasts.'
Qinglong-the patron saint of the East in Taoism
Qinglong, also known as "Black Dragon", is the God of the East in ancient mythology. Dragon is the totem of the Chinese nation. Since the Yellow Emperor entrusted it to Tianhe and weiser, it has been a symbol of the Chinese nation and even the whole of China, and its stereotype was in the Han Dynasty. Since the Great Han Dynasty, it has been identified as the symbol and representative of the emperor. In oriental legend, the dragon looks like a long snake, the head of a unicorn, the tail of a carp, a long beard, horns like deer and five claws, which is frightening. In western mythology, the dragon is more like a lizard with wings.
The dragon is the seven lodges in the East-horn, horn, fork, room, heart, tail and dustpan. These seven lodges are all shaped like dragons. From their meanings, we can see that the horn is the dragon's horn, the horn is the neck, the fork is the root, the room is the arm, the threat, the heart is the heart, and the tail is the tail. There is still a part of the dragon's heart, which some people call' fire', which is related to sunny and rainy days, and because Qinglong is a wood, it is also the age of Jupiter.

kylin
Kirin, also known as "Kirin" or "Lin" for short, is an animal in the ancient legend of China, which is also called "four spirits" with phoenix, turtle and dragon. Known as the sacred beastmaster. Moreover, it is a horse mount, ranking second only to Qinglong among the four spirits. Later, because the feudal emperor admired dragons and phoenixes, Kirin was excluded from the people. phoenix
Phoenix is the king of birds in ancient legends in China, and it is the national totem of Han nationality like dragon. Feathers are usually described as red. Phoenix, like Kirin, is a general term for male and female. Men are phoenixes and women are phoenixes, which are always called phoenixes. Phoenix in Qi Fei is a symbol of good luck and harmony. Phoenix usually represents women. Also known as Dan Bird, Firebird, Stork Chicken, Weifeng, etc.
The images are generally the head of a chicken, the mouth of a swallow, the neck of a snake, the claws of an eagle, the tail of a fish, the back of a turtle and the feathers of a peacock. There are five kinds of * * * in the legend, namely, Suzaku, Lanqingluan, Yellow Gull, White Honghu Lake and Purple Gull. According to myths and legends, every time a phoenix dies, it will ignite the whole body fire and then be reborn in the fire, which is called "phoenix nirvana". This cycle, get eternal life.
Phoenix has a noble character. If you don't drink it, it will be morning dew. If you don't eat it, it will be tender bamboo. If you don't live, it will be a thousand-year-old phoenix tree.
Phoenix was once regarded as yang, because the five elements belong to fire and represent men; Dragon and five elements belong to water and are regarded as yin, representing women. Later, because the image of the dragon was more popular with emperors, it was changed to take the dragon as the yang and the phoenix as the yin.
turtle
Turtle is the only realistic animal among the four spirits, and it also has the longest life span among animals. People not only regard the tortoise as a symbol of health and longevity, but also think that it has the spirituality to predict the future. In ancient times, before major events were held, wizards would burn tortoise shells, and then divine good or bad luck according to the crackling lines on the tortoise shells. Therefore, people call turtles "god turtles" and "spirit turtles". Turtles were once greatly respected in China. In the palaces, houses and tombs of ancient emperors, turtles cast in stone or bronze symbolize the country's long-term good luck.
dragon
Dragon is a miraculous animal in China mythology, fickle, sexually stimulating and beneficial to all things. It is said that it can be hidden and displayed, reaching the sky in the spring breeze and diving in the autumn wind. It can also cause clouds and rain. It was the leader of many scales, the head of the four spirits (dragon, phoenix, unicorn and turtle), and later became a symbol of imperial power. Emperors all claimed to be dragons, and their vessels were decorated with dragons.
Spirit and God are often confused. In fact, it is universally acknowledged that the "Four Gods" are auspicious beasts. The stereotypes of the "Four Gods" also predated the Zhou Dynasty. Of course, some people call the "four gods" the "four spirits". However, there are differences between the four spirits and the four gods in the Book of Rites.
Book of Rites Volume IV and Volume IX say, "Forest, phoenix, turtle and dragon are the four spirits".
The first volume of Book of Rites Quli says, "Well, the former Suzaku is behind Xuanwu, and the left dragon is behind the right white tiger", and its sparse statement says, "Suzaku, Xuanwu, Dragon and White Tiger are also named on all sides."
It can be seen that the two combinations of "four spirits" and "four gods" exist at the same time. The former refers to rare creatures on the ground (except turtles), while the latter refers to the stars in the sky.
The following comparison can also be made:
Black Dragon = Qi+Lin; Suzaku = Phoenix+Phoenix; White tiger = fennel+fennel; Xuanwu = tortoise+snake

According to Ci Yuan, "Ying Long" is a thousand-year-old dragon with wings, and the 500-year-old one is called Ceratosaurus. Dragons are extraordinary things and have a long life. Ying Long is the most expensive dragon (of course, some people think that Ying Long can refer to the ancient clan and tribe and the mysterious ancient country-Ying Long family and Yingguo). In Tianwen, Qu Yuan, a great poet in China, expressed his incomprehension about how dragons helped Dayu control water and how to draw a river on the ground with their tails to lead floods into the sea.
Ying Long's Illustrations in Ancient Books
It is still Ying Long, but this one is a bit like a western dragon.
Guo Long tiancheng Xuan

When Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty spoke, he said that dragons are watery and can prevent fire. It is suggested to put it on the roof to avoid fire. The second is that he is the second son of Long Jiuzi. The ancient book says, "the second is kissing, and sexual desire is good." A beast head in this room is also real. " Looks like a wild animal, with good and bad habits. It becomes a dragon on the top of temples, towers and pavilions, or a beast on the roof, and can also put out fires. Candle dragon
God beast in China ancient mythology. Also known as Yin Candle, he also wrote talon. A man with a dragon face and a candle in his mouth lit up the shadow of a dark place in the northwest. Legend has it that he has boundless magic. When he opens his eyes, the whole world lights up, that is, during the day; When you close your eyes, it will be dark, that is, at night. Today's cultural historians believe that Candle dragon is the myth of the northern dragon totem clan, and its true colors should be male roots, which evolved from male genitals. It came into being later than the era of female worship.
Shan Hai Jing Huang Da Jing: "Beyond the Northwest Sea, to the north of Chishui, there is Zhang Wei. There is a god, the snake's face is red, and his straight eyes are riding a horse, gloomy and bright. No food, no sleep, no rain. It is a nine-yin candle, which means Candle dragon. " Overseas classic: "The God of Zhongshan, named Yin Candle, regards it as day, sleeps as night, blows it as winter, calls it summer, doesn't drink or eat, doesn't stop, and breathes it as wind; It is a thousand miles long. It is on the east side of the cave. It is a thing, a human face, a snake's body and a red color. It lives at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain. " See Gong's Outline of Primitive Worship.
Chu Ci Tian Wen: "Why is the northwest open?" What about Candle dragon if the weather is bad? Another "big move": "There is a cold mountain in the north, and the dragon is forgiven. "
Candle dragon is in the north of Yanmen, covered by the mountains of Wei Yu, and there is no sun. The man of God has a dragon face and no feet. ("Huainanzi Terrain Training")
There is no news of yin and yang before the day reaches the northwest, so there is a fire dragon shining in Tianmen. (Guo Pu notes "The Great Wilderness Classic" and Candle dragon quotes "Poems with Fog")
"Wan Xing Jing" says: The sun follows the four directions. The ancient sage said: Candle dragon traveled eastward and the whole army was wiped out; When traveling westward, when traveling southward, he was big; He was badly killed when he traveled north. ("Yi Gan Wei Kun Chisel Volume")
"Overseas Classics": "The God of Zhongshan, named Yin Candle, regards it as day, sleeps as night, blows it as winter, calls it summer, does not drink or eat, does not stop, and breathes it as wind; It is a thousand miles long. It is on the east side of the cave. It is a thing, a human face, a snake's body and a red color. It lives at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain. "
All theories are similar, and obviously come from overseas classics and wild classics.

One of the ancient beasts, amphibians, generally lived in water, fierce and aggressive, and highly toxic. The most obvious feature is that its tail is different from ordinary snakes, and it is separated like two hooks. Moreover, crocodiles also use tail hooks to hook prey and then swallow it. This kind of snake is recorded in Zhu Ruoshui's article. It just seems that no one has heard of this kind of snake in recent hundreds of years.
