Family Structure

Family Structure

Family structure refers to the internal composition and functioning mechanism of a family, reflecting the interactions and interrelationships among family members.

Generally, the members of the family *** live together, *** produce and consume together, and are combined on the basis of consanguinity (the relationship between parent and child, brother and brother), also known as the biological reproduction unit of human society (the latter is to be clearly distinguished from the household household). The family is

formed on the basis of economic division of labor between men and women. It includes an institutionalized social unit within higher regional groups, between regional groups of the same type, based on the principle of avoidance of exogamy and consanguineous marriage, and the maintenance of proximity. It is therefore a universal unit peculiar to mankind. There is no unit of the same nature as the family in animal society. In animal groups, where the parent and offspring exist for a certain period of time*** and where there is a close interaction between the two, such animal groups (see ANIMAL SOCIETY) may also be called families or biological families (biological family). The groups formed by mothers and their young during the rearing period, as well as the large metamorphic family groups of social insects, are typical of biological families. Although the mating association (pair-pond) formed by males and females cannot be called a family, the group of animals during which there is a relationship between males and females, and consequently a parental and offspring nurturing relationship, is also often called a family. The origin of the human family is a difficult question in anthropology, and there has been no fixed doctrine since 1877, when L. H. Morgan's theory of primitive promiscuity was criticized.

Sociologists have divided traditional human family patterns into three categories:

The nuclear family: consisting of a husband and wife and their minor children;

The main family: consisting of a husband and wife, the couple's parents, or immediate ascendants, and minor children;

The extended family: consisting of the nuclear or main family plus other collateral relatives;

Expanding the family used to be a Chinese dream, and people often use the phrase "full of children and grandchildren" to express the success and happiness of their elders. It has been pointed out that it is a misconception that traditional Chinese society is dominated by the extended family. While it is true that the ideal is the large family, the so-called large family is not common. In fact, the so-called extended family existed mainly among the clans, and after all, such people were in the minority; the vast majority of the common people were small families with a nuclear or main family, and extended family style extended family did not exist.

This is an understanding of the traditional family; the modern model of the family has moved far beyond a simple trichotomy and is evolving in a more pluralistic direction.

Non-traditional Family Patterns:

Single Parent Families: Families in which a single father or mother raises minor children;

Single Family: Families in which people don't get married when they are old enough to get married, or don't get married again after a divorce and live alone;

Reconstructed Families: Families in which one of the spouses remarries, or both of the spouses remarry;

Dink Families : a family that earns double income, is fertile but does not want children, is romantically free and enjoys life;

Empty Nest Family: a family in which only the old couple lives.

Family Functions

Sexual Functions

Refers to the role that marriage and family play in the process of love between men and women.

Marriage and family are the form, guarantee and assurance of love between men and women.

After the creation of marriage and family, the relationship between men and women must take the form of marriage. Only in the form of marriage

The love between the two sexes that grows old together and is close to each other is legal. Marriage is the legal form of the relationship between a man and a woman. Relations between a man and a woman outside of marriage are not usually recognized by society.

Security means that the love between a man and a woman is only guaranteed in the form of marriage. Relationships between men and women outside the form of marriage can hardly give security to those involved.

Assurance means that the love between the two sexes requires a specific space and atmosphere, and only the family can fulfill this requirement.

Marriage provides a legitimate form and guarantee for the love between the two sexes, while the family provides a legitimate place for the love between the two sexes.

By the same token, the sexual function of marriage and family is based on the sexual requirements of both sexes. Therefore, the sexual differences between men and women are the physiological basis on which the marriage family can come into being. In this way, the relationship between the sexes becomes an indispensable lubricant for the maintenance of the marital family, without which the marital family loses the basis of its existence.

Reproductive function

The function of reproduction refers to the role of marriage and family in the process of human reproduction and development.

Engels: "Production itself ...... is of two kinds. On the one hand, the production of the means of subsistence, i.e., food, clothing, shelter, and the tools necessary for this; on the other hand, the production of mankind itself, i.e., the reproduction of the species." (Preface to the First Edition of The Origin of the Family, Private Ownership, and the State, 4 volumes of Selected Works of Man, People's Publishing House, 72nd edition, 4 pages)

Reproduction is an inevitable product of the union of the sexes and a manifestation of man's nature as a creature of nature. Since human procreation and reproduction are realized through the family, the function of procreation constitutes a basic function of the family, which is also a manifestation of the natural attributes of marriage and family.

But at the same time, we must also see that human beings are the main body of society, and the reproduction of the population is inevitably subject to the constraints of the production of social material resources and other social conditions, including the concept of reproduction. Therefore, the issue of reproduction is never a purely natural process, the production and reproduction of population is realized in certain social relations, marriage and family is the social form of population reproduction.

Under different social systems, the social function of the family in realizing the reproduction of population has its different characteristics.

In our feudal society, the ruling class, in order to increase more sources of labor and military service, adopted legislation to force people to marry and have children early. However, due to the constant wars and the low level of medical care, the reproduction of the population was characterized by a high fertility rate and also a high mortality rate, and the population growth was very slow.

The superiority of China's socialist system has changed the social conditions for the reproduction of the population, making the growth of the population as compatible as possible with the national economy. Insufficient awareness of this problem in the past, coupled with improved medical care, has led to long-term blind population growth, which has brought serious difficulties to China's economic development and people's lives. Therefore, for a long time to come, China must systematically reduce the rate of population growth and practise eugenics. This task is to be undertaken by every family and every couple of childbearing age. The practice of family planning is one of the important social functions of the family in China.

The social functions of marriage and family mainly include: the economic function of the family, the educational function of the family, and the function of family security.

Economic function

Family economic function consists of two parts:

Family production function shows that the family has the role of organizing production and business under certain conditions.

The consumption function of the family shows that the family has the function of consumption necessary for survival under any conditions.

The economic functions of the marital family are manifested in different ways at different times in history and under the influence of different modes of production.

In China, the economic function of the marital family is mainly manifested in the function of consumption, and it has always occupied a dominant position. From the founding of New China to the time of reform and opening up, this was very prominent. The productive function of the family was basically not brought into any play.

After the reform and opening up, especially after the implementation of market economy in China, the diversification of economic components and the diversification of business methods have made the economic functions of the marriage and family in China at present in a composite state.

In the cities, the economic function of the vast majority of families is dominated by the function of consumption, and their production function has basically disappeared. Family members mainly earn their living by participating in socialized labor, and the family mainly plays the role of consumption function. However, there are also many urban households, such as self-employed industrial and commercial households and individual partnership organizations, which have a dual function of production and consumption. The production function of the family has returned in these families.

In the countryside, the implementation of the responsibility system of joint production and contracting of farm households has restored the production function of the peasant's marriage and family

The family of love and affection has been restored. The family has been transformed from a purely consumer organization into an economic organization with the dual functions of production and consumption.

China's current economic function of the family is a composite state, especially the restoration of the production function of a certain family, indicating that the family as a social production and operation of the economic unit, in modern society, also has its rationality and necessity.

Educational functions

The family is a kinship group, its members have special and close ties with each other, either by marriage or by blood. Based on this special nature, the family takes on the important task of educating family members and training the next generation.

At the same time, this educational influence of the family is irreplaceable by any educational organization. People's character and personality concepts as well as a healthy psychological outlook, and its initial acceptance of family education is inseparable, parents as the children's first teacher, their words and deeds is the children's example of imitation. Therefore, the educational function of the family is a great responsibility and far-reaching.

Family education occupies a special position and role in social education, but family education cannot replace schools and other kinds of vocational education; only by combining family education with other kinds of education can we create high-level talents for modernization and give greater play to the role of family education and other education.

Support function

This refers to the function of a family in which an economically incapable family member is able to maintain a normal life by relying on the support of economically capable family members.

The support function is another basic function of the family. It is the traditional function of the family in China and the fine tradition of our people to bring up the young and help the family members who lack the ability to work and have no source of livelihood.

At present in our country, although we are practicing a socialist marriage and family system, backed up by social guarantees, there are still some people in need of financial help because of our large population and the varying abilities of each individual. Therefore, it becomes more important and prominent for us to emphasize that relatives within a certain range have the right and obligation to support each other, so as to safeguard the livelihood of the disadvantaged groups, and thus protect their personal and property interests.

The role played by the marriage and family in safeguarding the basic interests of family members is irreplaceable by other organizations. Our country has always had a fine tradition of respecting the old and loving the young, especially filial piety and respect for the elderly. This fine tradition of the marriage family has given the marriage family in China to protect the interests of family members.
