Supramolecular usually refers to the combination of two or more molecules relying on intermolecular interactions to form a complex, organized aggregates, and maintain a certain integrity so that it has a clear microstructure and macroscopic properties.

Molecular recognition is one of the core research contents of supramolecular chemistry. The so-called molecular recognition refers to the process in which the subject (receptor) selectively binds to the object (substrate) and produces a specific function. This binding does not rely on the traditional *** valence building forces, but on intermolecular forces known as non-*** valence bonds, such as van der Waals forces, hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds. This is actually a lock-and-key principle. In most cases, a larger number of intermolecular interactions are formed between the receptor and the substrate, and the sum and synergy of several intermolecular forces and have a certain directionality and selectivity, and the total binding force is no less than the strength of the chemical bond.
