In the process of its development, Donglu ancient painting drama has formed a unique performance style. In the early days, Xiao Sheng, Xiao Dan and the clown were the main characters, commonly known as the "three little guys". Most of his plays reflect small scenes of folk life or love entanglements.

During the development of Donglu Opera, artists of Donglu Opera created their own plays, including Two Captains, Half the Sky, Peach Blossom Ridge, Tian Xiuxiu and Wang Laohei's Tax Collection by Mei Jigui, a local playwright in Macheng, and Inventory, Mountain Soldiers and Riot Prevention Liaison by Donglu Troupe.
