The chess setup is based on the first horizontal line nearest to the player's side. The pieces set up by red should look like this (and by black in accordance with the principle of symmetry):
1. The first horizontal line: from left to right: rook, knight, phalanx, shi, shuai, shi, phalanx, knight, rook.
