A historical village formed by the combination of Shirakawa Township and Wuyue Mountain.
Hands folded (Japanese: hands folded) refers to a special form of Japanese residence, which is characterized by thatched roofs and herringbone roofs, so it is called "hands folded". The crossing hand is a wooden building, and no nails are needed in the construction process, but it is still very strong. The roof made by crossing hands is steep, in order to prevent the heavy snow in winter from crushing the roof and letting the snow slide down (similar to European architecture). Every thirty or forty years, the old thatched roof must be replaced. Replacing thatch requires a lot of manpower, so whenever a family's roof needs to be renovated, the whole village will cooperate with Qi Xin to finish it. This kind of cooperation is called knot (Japanese: ゆぃ).
Legend has it that this architectural form was invented in the13rd century, and was built in the mountains by the defeated Genji family in order to keep out the cold and avoid chasing troops. Existing buildings were built in the middle and late edo period.
It was German architect Bruno Todd who introduced cooperation to the whole world. He made a survey on the traditional Japanese residential style around 1935. After the field trip, he was surprised. In the book "Rediscovering the Beauty of Japan", Bruno praised it as "an extremely reasonable traditional ordinary building, which is quite rare even in Japan".
