How does it feel to be a sailor?

The feeling of being a seafarer can only be described as "suffocating". I once worked as a water transportation project supervisor for two years. I was constructing in China's offshore waters and could not land on land all year round. These two years have changed my outlook on life. My values ????have changed a lot. Let me tell you now.

Many people think that they are otakus, and it is quite good to be at sea. They can carry it with them in a small room, work at work, and play games online after get off work. It is very comfortable. Then I can only say that you are just trying to mess up Tucson. Well, there are three things in the ocean: no mobile phone signal, no computer network, and no freedom of movement. If you imagine, it is no better than being in jail.

First of all, let’s talk about food. I was still working on offshore construction at that time, and I was replenished by a supply ship every week. Food was still guaranteed, four meals a day, four dishes and one soup (three meat dishes) (one vegetarian), but as long as you go late, only meat dishes, chicken, duck and fish will be left. Vegetables are not easy to preserve. There are only some simple vegetables, which are difficult to eat. Sometimes there will be fruits, but that’s it. There is a limited amount. At the worst time, I would grab a handful of the coriander used for seasoning and stuff it into my mouth. It was so miserable. I won’t even mention it, but it was all tears. PS: Some people here will ask us why we have four meals, because the ships operate 24 hours a day, and there are people working all the time, so we prepare one meal every six hours.

As for entertainment, the space on the ship will not be particularly large. Some ships will have gyms, but please believe that, like gyms on land, most of them are just decorations and not so many people will go to exercise. In addition, there is a library, which is not beautiful and cannot be seen. There is no signal on the mobile phone, so I can’t communicate with my family or flirt with girls (there are only men on the boat). There is no Internet and I can’t play online games. All young people play Dota online, but as mentioned before, we work 24 hours a day. The room They can’t all be single rooms, so there’s basically one person sleeping in your room. It can’t be too noisy, which makes playing games a luxury. The key is that there are not enough people to say goodbye to the emptiness after entertainment. You won't want to try it. Some foreign ships will work overtime and hold parties on weekends, but we don’t do that. There’s no point in envying them. You won’t be able to have fun even if you are asked to do so.

The other thing is sleeping. Sleeping on the boat can give you a headache. The boat is very noisy. The machines are making huge noises all the time. When you first get on the boat, you can’t sleep because of the noise. When you get off the boat, there is no sound and you are not used to it. Can't sleep. The boat is always in motion, and the quality of my sleep is not very good. I often wake up and find that my head has been moved to the end of the bed, which is completely incomprehensible to people with a strong sense of direction. I have too much free time every day. When I'm not at work, I basically just sleep, take a shower, watch a movie (downloaded before boarding the ship), eat a meal, and wander around the house boringly. After a nap, I really slept too much and felt dizzy.

There are not many people on the boat, everyone performs their duties, and they work in three shifts. Basically, there are not many opportunities to meet and chat. After a long time, I found that I couldn’t stick out my tongue. It turns out that my eloquence is not bad. I feel like I am mute. After changing my job, I still have the habit of chattering, which is really frustrating.

Most ships are divided into several parts: the bridge, deck, and engine room. The corresponding highest positions are captain, first mate, and old ghost. Corporate ships also have political commissars. When I work, I really sit in the bridge. , the level is equivalent to the captain, but there is no one to criticize me. As a supervisor, I am always disliked. It is generally quiet in the cab. In order to listen to various information, there is no noise, let alone music and movies. It is dark at night. There is only such a large area on the deck, and it is very windy and rainy every day, so you have to be careful when walking. The cabin is the worst. Why is it called Lao Gui? It’s because it looks like a ghost in a dark and noisy place.

What should you do if you encounter a typhoon on the ship? It’s funny. The chance of encountering a typhoon when going to sea is definitely very high. Don’t think that all crew members are good swimmers. Most of them are landlubbers. Even if you can swim, you will still be gone in those complicated waters in three minutes. When the typhoon comes, everyone is afraid. They are so shaken that they can't eat and keep vomiting. The same goes for the old crew members, but they are more resistant. When my colleague encountered a typhoon for the first time, he could only hold his life jacket in the room. His face turned pale, and he was indeed a bit timid. It would be useless to hold anything if the ship crashed, but the scene was indeed quite scary. I encountered four typhoons in half a year, and I got used to it. All movable things in the house must be put on the ground or tied up. I had no choice but to eat, sleep, and vomit when I needed to.

After staying on the boat for a long time, the feeling of getting off the boat and walking on land can be summed up in one word: refreshing! But from then on, I didn’t like crowded places. I couldn’t even cross the road at first. I had to remember the traffic rules while standing on the side of the road. Should I go forward? How could I walk with so many people? The rough and unmistakable look is hilarious.

Life on board is very hard, and the most important thing is mental torture. People will always have some psychological problems after staying for a long time, but fortunately, the Chinese people have a good tolerance, and they will just go back to it if they get used to it. That's okay, as technology advances in the future, life on board will improve, but for now, being a sailor is really not a good choice.
