What language family does Mongolian belong to?
Mongolian belongs to Mongolian family of Altai language family, and its main users are Mongolians, mainly distributed in Mongolian inhabited areas in People's Republic of China (PRC) and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and in Siberia Federal District of the Russian Federation. The Mongolian language now used in Mongolia, because it was rewritten by the former Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s, has been divorced from the original Mongolian language family. The Siberian Federal District of the Russian Federation and Mongolia use the same language. Because the use of Mongolian in China is restricted by ethnic groups and the language structure is rigorous, most of the younger generation of Mongolians gradually stop using their mother tongue Mongolian for communication. Therefore, the inheritance of Mongolian language is seriously affected and is in danger of extinction. It belongs to Altaic language family.
