How long is the shelf life of rice?

In life, our parents always buy a lot of rice and store it at home.

Many times, the worms haven't finished growing, but they still try their best to repel them and continue to eat.

They always think that rice has no shelf life.

Are your parents like this?

Because the rice on the market is mixed, there are many places to pay attention to when choosing rice.

It is necessary to know the manufacturer, production date, implementation standards and other information of the products in detail, and resolutely resist the "three noes" products. On this basis, be sure to check the shelf life of the product. It depends not only on whether the product has expired, but also on whether the rice is still in the shelf life before eating.

The shelf life of rice varies with its processing methods and packaging methods.

-The shelf life of vacuum packed rice can reach 12 months;

-Ordinary packaging, maybe only 6- 12 months;

-The shelf life of bulk rice is not clearly defined, generally 3 months in summer and 6 months in autumn and winter.

So can the rice after the shelf life still be eaten?

In an effective storage environment, the shelf life is a key period. There are actually two possibilities for rice that has passed the shelf life.

First, during the storage process, the temperature, humidity and light intensity should be reasonably ensured, and the rice has not deteriorated after expiration. Only the nutrients such as starch, fat and protein in rice will change, making rice lose its original color, fragrance and taste. I suggest you eat carefully.

Secondly, due to poor storage environment, rice may age or easily breed mold substances invisible to the naked eye and produce toxins, the most common of which are aflatoxin and yellow rice toxin. Even if the rice is only a little moldy, it will affect the rest, so don't eat it again.

Moldy rice can be sold to farmers to feed poultry, or taken to the square to feed pigeons. If the mildew is serious, it is recommended to throw it away directly.

How to tell if rice is moldy?

Smell: Smell is a harbinger of rice mildew.

The smell of rice in the early stage of mildew is not obvious. At this time, measures should be taken quickly to lay the rice flat in a clean, dry, ventilated place without direct sunlight.

Look: There are three ways to tell whether rice is moldy or not.

1, bran removal: As the rice grain is wet, the bran powder or unpolished bran attached to the rice grain floats, which shows that the rice grain is rough and not smooth.

2. Emergence: Because the embryo tissue of rice is loose and contains protein and more fat, the mold first erodes and discolors the embryo, commonly known as "emergence".

3. Rib: The grooves on the side and back of rice grains are white and then grayish white, so it is called rib, and the color of rice is dark.

Touch: Grasping a handful of rice with your hand will make it into a ball.

Due to the metabolic respiration of rice and microorganisms, local moisture condenses and rice grains are wet, which is called sweating. Its hardness decreases, its dispersibility decreases, and it can be agglomerated by hand.
