Because this medicine has limited effect. This can only be achieved by physical means.

Physically, we can only shake the chewing gum loose, then suck it out with suction or thrust, and shake it constantly before it can be discharged. In other words, two forces are needed, one is the power of shaking, and the other is the power of sucking or pushing outward.

Cough shakes the airway.

The same is true for eliminating sputum in the patient's airway. We need to shake our airways, shake them and loosen the sputum. Cough is a way to shake the airway.

But! In the face of thick, large and deep sputum in the lungs, frequent coughing has little effect on expectoration, but it makes patients more and more uncomfortable.

When coughing, you inhale deeply, then the glottis close, the respiratory muscles and diaphragm contract hard, then the glottis suddenly open, the abdominal muscles contract, and the high-pressure air in the lungs is ejected. This kind of coherent movement is quite tiring, not to mention the elderly with respiratory diseases, and even young people may not last for a few days.

Frequent coughing can also aggravate the symptoms of bronchospasm and shortness of breath, so patients with severe cough need to use cough medicine, but after taking cough medicine, sputum can not be discharged.

Cilia swing to push phlegm.

There is a layer of ciliated epithelium on the inner wall of our trachea. Countless cilia fluctuate like wheat waves, the frequency is 1000 times per minute, which drives out the garbage in the lungs in waves and finally concentrates in the pharynx and excretes it. Cilia, like a broom, cleans the garbage in our airway and is known as the "cleaner" of the airway.

But (but again), the patient's sputum is not in two bites, but in piles. This pile of phlegm in the airway directly sticks the tiny cilia and cannot swing.
