Players are not usually required to master all six skills serve, first pass (serve receive), second pass (lift and hold), dink, block, and save, but usually specialize in one or more of them, depending on the team's tactics. The most common positional assignments encompass three positions: attacker (divided into primary and secondary attackers), second passer, and libero (a player who specializes in defense). In order to block the opponent's attack and bounce the ball at a steep angle at high speed before the opponent has enough time to react, the attacker is generally a taller player with good jumping ability.
