How did Grimm's fairy tales come from?
Writing background
Grimm's fairy tales came into being at the beginning of19th century. At this time, the structure of Germany under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire was loose, and the country and the nation lacked unity. 1806 Napoleon disintegrated the holy Roman empire, aroused the awakening of German national consciousness, and a large number of intellectuals joined the national liberation movement. However, the differences between the principality and the free city, including language and culture, have become obstacles to the formation of a unified national spirit.
In order to eliminate this cultural barrier, some intellectuals began to preach cultural nationalism. While adhering to the romantic cultural spirit, they also turned their attention to the traditional fields of folk culture, starting with collecting and studying folk literature and art, relying on folk songs and fairy tales. In this context, the Brothers Grimm began to collect fairy tales and stories which are widely circulated among German people and contain German national characteristics.
