What are WAN, LAN and MAN?

WAN:

When the distance between hubs is exceeded in an area, it must be connected through a router. This network type is called WAN. If there are branches in North, Central and South China, or even overseas branches, these branches are connected by special lines, which is called "WAN".

wide area network coverage: several hundred kilometers to several thousand kilometers.

The transmission medium of WAN mainly uses telephone lines or optical fibers, and ISP operators connect enterprises. These lines are pre-buried in roads, lakes and seabed by ISP operators. Because the project is huge, the maintenance is not easy, and the bandwidth can be guaranteed, the cost will be more expensive.

LAN:

1. The geographical distribution is small, usually hundreds of meters to several kilometers. It can cover a building, a campus, an enterprise and a family.

2. The data transmission rate is high, generally 1Mbps. At present, there have been LANs with the speed as high as

1Mbps. Can exchange all kinds of digital and non-digital (such as voice, image, video, etc.) information.

3. The bit error rate is low, because the local area network usually adopts short-distance baseband transmission, which can use high-quality transmission media, thus improving the data transmission quality.

Metropolitan Area Network:

metropolitan area network (MAN) refers to a large computer network. MAN is to improve the transmission medium in LAN and expand the scope of LAN.

1. It is a large local area network, which needs higher cost, but can provide faster transmission rate.

2. The geographical distribution norm is relatively large, generally ranging from tens of kilometers to hundreds of axioms. It can cover a city and a metropolitan area.

3. It belongs to broadband local area network, and its transmission medium is mainly optical cable, with the transmission rate above 1 megabits per second.

4. an important use of MAN is as a backbone network, through which hosts, databases and LANs located in different places in the same city are connected with each other.
