The significance of sampan

Sampan (sampan) is also called sampan. "Sampan" is a common word, which means "board". It is a kind of ship, also called "three boards", which was originally made of three boards. This is a wooden boat. Generally small, civilian sampans often take 2-3 people, and military sampans take about 10 people. Sampans are still used in some places.

The original name of "junk" refers to "a ship as big as a mountain", that is, the mother ship; "Ship" originally refers to "a small boat that shuttles between big ships or between big ships and docks", that is, a sub-ship (traffic boat, lifeboat). Because the relationship between "mother" and "son" is inseparable, the word "sampan" is combined to express the meaning of "sampan" [ 1]

brief introduction

Sampan, the simplest small wooden boat, has no deck. Also known as "three boards" and "three editions". At first, it may be composed of three boards, namely a bottom board and two side boards, and later it developed into a common boat. In addition to civilian use, it is also used as a military ship. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, sampans were compiled, and some of them were equipped with artillery. Volume 938 "Ministry of Shipping Administration" "Ten sampans are a battalion, and twenty gunboats are a battalion". [2]

Ship seal

There are some wooden partitions under the deck of the ship, called waterproof partitions. They divided the hull into a series of waterproof compartments for loading goods. If the ship is damaged, these compartments can prevent seawater from flooding into the whole hull. [4]

rudder

The rudder on the sampan is usually relatively large, suspended below the tail and can be lifted by a chain. In shallow water, the rudder blade is raised a little, and the crew sails with a short rudder. In deep water, the rudder blade is lowered a little, which is suitable for using a long rudder. [4]

Stern part

The tail is generally square, and the cabin is above it, which is usually the place where the crew live and cook. [4]

Sampan decoration

The stern of a sampan often draws some traditional patterns, and almost all the stern of a sampan draws a pair of eyes. Sailors believe that these traditional patterns will bring good luck, wealth and peace. The most common color is red, because China people think red can ward off evil spirits. On fishing boats in China, different eyes are different.
