Peony is one of the earliest ornamental flowers in China. At the beginning of peony cultivation, it became attached to Luoyang. Peony in Luoyang began in Sui Dynasty and flourished in Tang Dynasty, while it was "the best in the world" in Song Dynasty, with a history of 1500 years.

During the Northern Song Dynasty, Luoyang not only became the center of peony cultivation in China, but also appeared a number of peony monographs with important academic value, which made important contributions to the research, popularization and development of peony. In the first year of Jingyou (1034), Ouyang Xiu wrote "Luoyang Peony", describing the custom of Luoyang people to grow flowers and enjoy them. This is the first peony monograph with important academic value in the world.

Later, Zhou (1082) wrote Tales of Peony in Luoyang and Tales of Flowers and Trees in Luoyang, listing peony 109 species and peony 4 1 species. During the period of Yuan You (1086- 1093), Zhang Ge wrote "Luoyang Flower Catalogue", listing 1 19 species of peony. These monographs provided important materials for promoting the development of peony in China at that time, and also for future generations to study peony.

Luoyang peony culture is an important part of Heluo culture. Peony's poems, songs, novels and stories, which have appeared since the Tang and Song Dynasties, are as rich in content as paintings and embroideries.
