Campus Introduction

Beijing Dancing Academy (BDA), located in Haidian District of Beijing, is the first municipal undergraduate institution established in New China to carry out professional dance education, and is known as the "cradle of dancers". As of December 2014, the school covers an area of 57,333 square meters (86 acres); it has 15 teaching institutes and operates 5 undergraduate majors; there are more than 500 teaching staff, including 22 professors, 330 full-time teachers and 95 people with technical titles above the rank of associate professor; there are about 3,500 full-time students, and more than 400 students in the School of Continuing Education. Beijing Dance Academy History

In February 1954, the first batch of instructors of dance education in new China received systematic training from Soviet experts in a courtyard in Xiangbait Hutong, Dongcheng District, which opened the prelude to dance education in China.

Beijing Dance Academy

September 6, 1954, Beijing Dance School in Baijiazhuang held a "school ceremony", the then Minister of Culture Mao Dun for the school to cut the ribbon.

In 1955, the school represented China for the first time to participate in the World Youth Student Peace and Friendship Festival competition, choreographed by Jia Zuoguang "Ordos" won the first international gold medal.

In 1956, the school staged its first full-length ballet, Unprofitable Prudence.

In July 1958, the school staged its first successful public performance of the world's classic ballet Swan Lake, which gave birth to the first white swan trained by the school: Bai Shuxiang.

In 1959, the school set up China's first experimental ballet company, the Experimental Ballet Affiliated to the Beijing Dance School, which was also the predecessor of the Central Ballet; in the same year, the school presented the first self-choreographed and self-performed folk dance drama, The Fish Beauty, which marked the entry of Chinese folk dance dramas into a brand new stage of development.

In 1960, the school launched the first batch of teaching materials: Teaching Method of Chinese Classical Dance, Basic Training of Classical Ballet, and Teaching Method of Classical Ballet Pair Dance. These teaching materials later became the model teaching materials for national dance colleges; in the same year, under the instruction of Premier Zhou Enlai, China's first Oriental Music and Dance Class was established, which also became the predecessor of Oriental Song and Dance Troupe, which is renowned both at home and abroad; in the same year, the school's key teachers and outstanding graduates for the first time to support the local community, and the establishment of a national key secondary school - Shanghai Dance School.

Beijing Dance Academy

In 1962, in the dance competition of the World Youth Gala, the student Chen Ailian for the first time for China in the world competition alone won two gold medals.

In 1978, the Beijing Dance School was reorganized into the Beijing Dance Academy.

In 2000, the Beijing Dance Academy was transferred to the administration of Beijing Municipality.

In 2001, Beijing Dance Academy added the disciplines of Musical Theater, Art Communication and Art Design.

Collections

By December 31, 2011, the collection of Chinese and foreign dancers in the Beijing Dance Academy had been expanded to include a number of Chinese dancers. Academic Journals

The Journal of Beijing Dance Academy is the only academic journal organized by the Beijing Dance Academy with the purpose of researching basic dance theories and sets of theories, and it is published bimonthly; it is a national and international standard continuous publication. It covers basic dance theory research, dance education research, dance creation and performance research, dance scientific research and other columns; since 2004, it has been named "National Chinese Core Journal" and "China Humanities and Social Sciences Journal Core Journal"; in 2014, it was selected as the only dance academic journal in the directory of CSSCI source journals (2014-2015).
