Childhood classic - Korean cartoon "Once Upon a Time"

"Once upon a time, when foxes still smoked cigarettes, grandpa's sneeze brought thunder from the sky. Grandpa's sneeze attracted thunder in the sky ......" At that time, because of the sardonic lyrics, I decided to take a look at this Korean animated series "Korean Folklore Tales". Korea has always studied the Japanese style, and this one is no exception. However, this anime has a lot of character. The graphics are exquisite, and the narrative is told in a way that is quite appealing. Now I vaguely remember a few of the stories, so I've written an essay on it as a reminder of my childhood.

Remember that the animation is narrated by the cabbage Taoist and radish Taoist, and sometimes by the two children look like the elves to narrate. I preferred the way those two Taoist priests were very old-fashioned. Taoist Cabbage is green with a square face and wears a blue robe. The radish Taoist priest looks more like the Chinese mythological longevity star, with a big forehead and dark red robe. I remember the Korean song at the end of the movie: "Once upon a time, there was a cabbage priest and a radish priest. Cabbage Taoist from Baekdu Mountain, Radish Taoist from Hanna Mountain ......" As the song plays, the two Taoist priests come out in the clouds. In addition to storytelling, these two Taoist priests sometimes make cameo appearances in supporting roles in the story, often in more hilarious roles, so every time you listen to the theme song you will have a hilarious feeling.

Since Korea is y influenced by Chinese culture, some of the legends are clearly inspired by Chinese folklore, and it's hard to tell who copied who. One of them is the story of the conch girl, which resembles a paper-cut animation called "The Conch Girl" made in China in the early years. A farmer who couldn't get a wife retrieved a snail, and from then on, every day he came home with a hot meal ready to be served. Once the farmer deliberately came home early and found that the conch had turned into a beautiful woman cooking for him. The rest of the story is completely Korean. The girl asked the farmer to wait for three years, but the farmer was desperate for a wife. The girl sees the farmer's pity and marries him. The prince takes a liking to the girl and sets three competitions with the farmer, with rowing boats, planting trees and whatnot (what kind of competitions are these?). The farmer wins them all with the girl's help, and the two live happily ever after. Then the plot takes a sharp turn for the worse. Didn't the girl ask the farmer to wait three years? Because the girl is the daughter of the Dragon King, and after three years she will go back to the Dragon Palace. The girl said that if he was willing to wait three years, then they could be together in this life. But the farmer refused to do so, so they could only spend three years together. After saying that, the girl went back to the Dragon Palace. And the farmer killed himself after the girl went back to the dragon palace. Having said that, I think it's pretty raw to have it end so tragically later on, even though it avoids the bad taste.

Another one with a Chinese flavor is the story about the rooster. A farmer saves a fawn, and the fawn, in return for his kindness, tells him that a fairy from heaven comes down to bathe at a certain time every year. The farmer goes to a lake under the direction of the fawn and hides the dress of one of the fairies (the fairy can only return to heaven if she wears this dress). The fairy can't go back to heaven, so she marries the farmer. The story up to this point is very much like the story of the cowherd and the weaving of the maiden. But the rest of the story is different. The deer warns the farmer that he must wait until the fairy has given birth to three children before he can return the dress to her. Otherwise the fairy will throw him away and go back to heaven. But the farmer, who loved his wife so much that he couldn't bear to see her sad, returned the dress to her. The fairy immediately returned to heaven with his two children. The farmer was very sad and came to the deer again. The deer pointed out to him that the heavenly palace would put down a big bucket to fetch water at a certain time, so the farmer climbed on the bucket and came to heaven to be reunited with the fairy's wife. The farmer stayed in heaven for a while and began to miss his mother on earth. The fairy told him to ride his heavenly horse home to visit his mother. The fairy said that the horse could not be frightened and told the farmer to make sure he did not get off the horse or he would not be able to come back. When the farmer went home, his mother brought him soup, but the soup was spilled, and the heavenly horse got frightened and left the farmer alone to go back to heaven. The farmer could no longer return to heaven and soon died of depression. After his death, the farmer was transformed into a rooster, and he crowed to the sky every day to miss his wife in heaven. The question I've been wanting to ask after reading this story is what happened to the hen again? Laughs. Throughout the story, I had some very un-CJ thoughts. It always seemed to me that the fairy didn't seem to like the farmer very much, so she kept trying to find a way to get rid of her husband. Why else would she be so eager to go back to heaven with the baby as soon as she puts on her fairy clothes? When the hubby goes home to visit his mother, why give him the shitty heavenly horse that can't be frightened? Heh, I didn't think so much of it when I watched it back then, but now when I think about it how it's full of intrigue ......

Of course, there's quite a bit of original Korean folklore in there, and there are a lot of funny and heartwarming good stories in there. There were two that stuck with me. One is the story of a tiger recognizing his family. A young boy went into the mountains and was unlucky enough to run into a tiger. The tiger hadn't eaten dinner yet and didn't mind using the boy for dinner. The boy was in a hurry and called out to the tiger, "Brother". The tiger was surprised and asked the boy why he called him "brother". The boy told the tiger that his mother had told him that his brother had been cursed and turned into a tiger, and that he should come out to find him. His mother said that the tiger with the word "king" on its head was his brother. The tiger obviously had no common sense and didn't know that every tiger has the word "king" on its head, so he buried his head and thought hard about when he had a human mother and brother. Of course, the tiger couldn't remember, so he hugged the boy and cried, saying that he was so unfilial that he couldn't even remember his own mother and brother. In this way, the boy was not only not eaten by the tiger, but also had a tiger brother. This brother was very conscientious, and would drop off a boar he had shot at his mother's door every day. The tiger, who seemed to be a bit of a human being later on, saw the wolves attacking a group of merchants and came to their rescue. The leading merchant had a very beautiful daughter, and the tiger arranged for her to marry his brother, the boy. When the old mother fell ill, the tiger went out to find a cure for her, despite the fact that he was also sick. The tiger fought with the snake that guarded the herb and finally got the herb, but he died as a result. The boy cries at the tiger's grave, saying that he only lied to save his life, but he never thought he would get such a good brother.

Another story is also about a tiger (God knows why I always have trouble with tigers). There was a village where tigers used to eat children. One day, the tiger came down again and jumped into a family's yard. The child of the family was crying for some reason. The child's mother coaxed him, saying, "If you keep crying, the bobcat will come. The tiger, hearing this in the yard, waved his head disdainfully, "What is a bobcat? The child still cried. So the mother said, "If you cry again, the wolves will come. The tiger bristled and said, "What's a coyote? Just say my name and he'll stop crying. The boy still cried. The mother said, "If you cry again, the tiger will come. The tiger nodded outside. However, the child did not give face to the tiger and still cried. The mother had no choice, but remembered that her child loved persimmon cakes, so she said, "Here are some persimmon cakes for you. The child immediately stopped crying. So the tiger thought, what is that persimmon cake, so powerful? There was a cattle thief in the village who used to come out at night to steal cattle. This cow thief also happened to steal from this house on this day. He climbed up the wall and saw the tiger's shadow, thinking that the family did not close the cattle, and jumped on the tiger's back with joy. The tiger was thinking about the persimmon cake, and then his soul was scattered, and he yelled, "Here comes the persimmon cake!" And then began to run wildly. The cattle thief had not yet recovered his strength, and instinctively grabbed the tiger's tail. The tiger wanted to get rid of the "persimmon cake", but how can not get rid of, do not dare to turn back, only desperately running into the mountains. The cattle thief finally saw that he was catching a tiger, and was so scared that he rolled down the mountain and was caught. The tiger was afraid of the "persimmon cake" and never came down the mountain again. I remember the last shot of the story is the tiger walking towards the mountain alone, and the voice over is the tiger's mental activity: this persimmon cake is really scary! When I think about it now, I still think the story is wonderful. It turns out that folklore can be made up like that.

Remember the story of the magpie, a scholar went to the capital to catch the examination, passing through the mountains, saw a snake to eat a small magpie, magpie mother to drive away the snake desperately screaming, all to no avail, the man went up and killed the snake, saved the little magpie. At night, the man in the mountains of the broken temple stayed overnight, the next morning, he found another snake in his side, he was afraid, the snake spit out the letter, said: you killed yesterday is my husband, we are together in the mountains to practice, soon to become immortal, he was hungry yesterday, so he went to eat a small magpie, but you killed him, and now I want to eat you, to avenge his death. The young man said in despair: Isn't there any other way? Of course there is, if the bell on the hilltop can strike three times before the sun comes up. But that was impossible, the sun was about to rise, and the young man waited in despair for death, and at that moment the bell rang, and the serpent screamed and fell to the ground dead. The young man wanted to see who had saved him, so he ran to the top of the hill, and when he saw magpies lying there dying all over the place, he realized that the magpies had struck the bell in flocks for the sake of saving his life.

There is an episode about a scholar to go to the capital to catch the examination after a few years to go home and found that there is a home with their own exactly the same person pretending to be themselves Later, the abbot of the temple asked him to cut his toenails outside after cutting how to deal with he realized that the original is that he confiscated those fingernails to let the rats ate into the appearance of him pretending to be him -_-, and then the rats into his appearance to return to his home to get away with it, etc. He came back to the home when surprised, and then the rat turned into his appearance, and then the rat turned into his appearance to return to his home to get away with it, and so on. when he returned home was shocked, and then has been with him with the Taoist priests said to catch a cat to can drive him away, the specifics of what reasoning to forget, only remember the storyline

Remember that there is an episode is about a son to kill his mother, the heart of her to dig out, and later on, the son of the mother to kill his mother. He cut out her heart, and then the son fell over, and the mother's heart said, "Son, does it hurt?" Touched to death

Remember there was a lobster story~~~That little lobster envied this and that, and ended up becoming a monster, not like a lobster, not like XX (forget 。。。。)

There is also a fox story, there is a fox like a scholar, want to marry him, and then the fairy said that the fox can be turned into a person, but can not eat chicken, the fox waited for many days, will soon become a person before finally could not help but to eat a chicken, the results were found by the scholar is a fox, and the fox sadly cried and went away. (Very touching :)
