Extended information:
The part of a Chinese character's sound other than the consonant and tone. The old name is rhyme. Rhyme can be divided into rhyme head (medial), rhyme belly (main vowel), rhyme tail three parts. For example, the rhyme of niáng (娘) is iang (iang), where i is the beginning, α is the middle, and ng is the end. Every rhyme must have a vowel, and the beginning and end are optional.
For example, dà rhymes with α, which is the rhyming vowel and has no beginning or end; guā rhymes with ua, in which u is the beginning and α is the beginning and has no end; and dāo (knife) rhymes with dāo, which is the beginning and the end of the word. The rhyme scheme of "dāo" is ao, where α is the rhyming head, o is the rhyming tail, and there is no rhyming head.
