What are Dazu Rock Carvings?
Dazu Rock Carvings is the general name for the 102 cliff statues in Dazu County, Chongqing. They are large in scale, exquisite in carving skills, rich in content, have distinctive national characteristics, have high historical value, and occupy a pivotal position in the history of ancient Chinese grotto art.
The Dazu Rock Carvings were first excavated in 892 and completed in 1162 through the Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Five dynasties. It lasted more than 250 years, and its lingering charm extended to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After many vicissitudes, it is a treasure house of grotto art with a long history.
