The main transmission media that can be used for Ethernet

Twisted pair, thin cable, thick cable, and fiber optic cable.

Each version of Ethernet on the physical layer has a maximum length limit for the cable (i.e., the length at which amplification is not necessary), within which signals can propagate normally, beyond which signals will not propagate.

To allow for the construction of larger networks, multiple cables can be connected using repeaters. A repeater is a physical layer device that receives, amplifies and retransmits signals in both directions. On these cables, information is sent using Manchester encoding.

Ethernet Origins:

The story of Ethernet began during the ALOHA period, exactly when a student named Bob Metcalfe, who had received a bachelor's degree from MIT. after moving across the river to Harvard University to pursue a PhD. During his studies, he came across Abramson's work, which interested him.

After graduating from Harvard, he decided to stay in Hawaii on vacation before heading to his official job at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in order to help Abramson with his work. When he arrived at the Palo Alto Research Center, he saw that the researchers there had already designed and built machines that came to be known as personal computers, but they were all alone;

he then used the knowledge he had gained from helping Abramson to design and implement the first local area network (LAN) with his colleague David Boggs. This LAN used a long thick coaxial cable running at 3Mbps.

They named the system Ethernet, and it was once thought that electromagnetic radiation could be transmitted through it.
