What are the distinctive old streets in Macau?
1, street sign
In the early years of Portuguese rule, the Portuguese names of street famous brands generally accounted for three quarters of the area of famous brands, while Chinese only accounted for a quarter. Portuguese was on the left, Chinese was on the right, and Chinese was a straight book. Typical example: in front of the discussion booth. However, after the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the street names in Chinese and Portuguese were 50% and 50% respectively, with Chinese at the top and Portuguese at the bottom, and the Chinese name of the street was changed from the original straight book to the horizontal book.
2. Banzhangtang Street
The so-called route, as its name implies, is behind the winding gravel road, which contains this tortuous historical sad story. Banzhangtang Street, which is connected with the front of the deliberation pavilion, is an artery in the central part of Macao. It is named after a Catholic church in this area called the Church of Our Lady of Roses (also known as Banzhangtang or Domingo Church).
More than 400 years ago, when this church was built, due to the lack of funds, Dominican priests could only simply use wooden boards as churches, which is far from the churches we see today.
At the same time, Banzhangtang Street has always been one of the important Portuguese communities in Macao, and it is also connected with the Chinese community, which can be said to be a model of the integration of China and the West. It is the historical background of Ban Zhangtang that "there is not much land in Holland, but many people live in different places". In 1950s and 1960s, with the economic development of Xinma Road and Neigang, Banzhang Street flourished for a while, which can be described as a prime location.
3. Tianshen Lane
Tianshen Lane, which connects Baimaxing and the end of the pond, seems to be no longer ordinary, and there are many shops, which has become the usual gathering place for young people in Macao today. In the face of hip-hop punk graffiti, the two-story old house in the alley is hard to hide.
A hundred years ago, foreigners and local Chinese lived in different areas, and most foreign companies and houses were located in Shuitangwei, Jaslan and Nanwan. Markets and shops are mostly concentrated in Yingjie, Guanqian Street, Baimaxing, Xia Huan Street and Beiwan. Therefore, whenever foreigners want to go shopping in markets, shops and other commercial areas, they have to go through Tianshen Lane (at that time, important streets such as Xinma Road were not open).
Tianshen Lane has become a street that runs through the lives of foreigners and China people, and it is very lively. Tianshen Lane, with its numerous luxury houses, is the settlement of many wealthy businessmen and famous families of Yin merchants in Macao. There are many Chinese and western mansions, among which Cao, Song and Wang's mansions are the largest.
For example, the Qingping Theater on Qingping Street was founded by Wang Lu, a rich gentleman; Cao You, Song Shen, etc. Everyone lives here, celebrities gather, and there is a scene of prosperity. Whenever there are parades, military exercises, weddings, funerals, ceremonies, major celebrations, etc. You must pass by here, and even a Catholic bishop's car is parked here. It's very lively.
4. Shui Hang Mei Street
It starts from Nanwan Avenue in the south and ends at the junction of East Wang Yang Street and Holland Park Avenue in the north. Shuikengwei Street, located in the middle of Macao Peninsula, is 380 meters long.
In the past, it was located in the valley between Shizishan (Paoshan) and Songshan (Dongwangyangshan). During the rainy season, rainwater accumulates in the valley and becomes pit water. Pit water flows out of Nanwan through today's puddle tail, because it is at the end of the puddle water, so it is called Shuikeng tail street. There is a little-known history behind every bustling street, and Shuikengwei Street is no exception.
5. New road
It starts from Nanwan Avenue in the east, reaches Yindao Avenue in the west, and reaches between Huochuantou Street and Bassodar Ancient Street in the west, with a total length of 620 meters, running through the east and west sides of Macao Peninsula, and is also one of the most important east-west arteries in Macao today. The new road opened in 19 18 was called "new road" at the beginning of its opening and before it was named.
The most distinctive feature is the well-preserved "arcade" building in the 1920s and 1930s. The biggest feature of the so-called "arcade" is that it can be used for both business and residence. The upper floor can be used as residence, warehouse and office building, and the lower floor can be used for pavement management. The most famous pawnshop here belongs to the property of Gao Kening gentlemen, and today's cultural club is Decheng Publishing House.
