On Traditional Wushu and Modern Fighting

I practice traditional empty-handed Okinawa (Kobayashi), so I can be regarded as a practitioner of traditional oriental martial arts. This kind of question is easy to answer, but I still want to talk about my opinion. The above is just my personal one-sided view. If there are any mistakes, please ask Han Hai. I hope everyone will see the end.

In my answer, most modern martial arts refer to ring fighting (except Ma Jiashu and Sistema), while traditional martial arts refer to martial arts with inheritance, and all kinds of skills are not suitable for ring fighting.

First of all, I think the development purpose of traditional Wushu and modern Wushu is different.

Traditional Wushu was once used as an armed force. In order to maintain its military superiority, there are more or less sects and esoterics. Can't fight, practiced, not practiced, this is the effect of martial arts. Imagine that two villages are fighting for a piece of land, and someone has mastered the trick and has superior combat effectiveness. Will he reveal the mystery of this fighting capacity to others? After it is revealed, he may have no advantage. This skill means advantage means benefit, and this way of attack and defense is still given priority to those who can trust quietly.

Modern Wushu is mostly a competition in the ring. The technology is very transparent and open, because everyone saw how you played the last ring. Therefore, modern fighting does not particularly emphasize how special the moves are, and there are few myths and tricks. Most of the differences are caused by physical fitness and training. Moreover, the competition usually has better medical care, better care after the competition, and various guarantees are relatively sound, unlike traditional martial arts, which should consider labor production or subsequent life.

Then the equipment is poor.

The practice of traditional Wushu usually includes a lot of hands and feet strengthening exercises, such as iron sand palm and hitting tree trunks. Because traditional martial arts are mostly bare-handed, if you want to attack, you have to be strong. Since there is no equipment protection, you need to protect yourself from the beginning, and it is not easy to fight in places that are not easy to fight. For example, no matter how hard your hands are practiced, they are not as hard as your forehead, and your teeth may be infected with bacteria if they are broken. In addition, hitting uneven things with fists is easy to leak wrists, so many people either start with the palm method, slap in the face and stab in the eyes, or attack the body with various fists and elbows.

In modern martial arts, even if the opponent's gloves are thin, it is a great protection. In the18th century before the birth of gloves, even in the western naked boxing competition, the two men were very cautious and would not blow their heads off easily. Gloves are also a kind of protection for each other, which will not easily cause head bleeding, eardrum perforation and blindness, so it is not easy to be disfigured and disabled when hitting the head, and the KO rate is high. Why not use them?

Many people criticize that traditional Wushu has not started. In fact, if you don't have gloves, you will get hurt easily with your fist at first, and you will be disfigured and covered with blood. The moral condemnation behind it is enough for you. It is also said that Wushu does not protect the head, and both sides can't stop such a small and fast fist without wearing big gloves. Boxing can't be used to protect the head at all, either sticking to other people's hands or pulling each other away for a second.

The same is true of western boxing before the popularity of gloves:

Let's talk about the difference between the rules.

This is a cliche.

In the most primitive application of traditional Wushu, there is no clear time to start fighting. The two sides may quarrel, push and then do it. They don't know what the distance is, what the posture is, what the state of both sides is, and how many people there are in each other. So, it's complicated to practice everything. If you want to skillfully use the appropriate skills to achieve the appropriate goals, you have to rely on your life experience. When to catch the main opponent and when to attack the malicious hand, there are all stresses. Therefore, not only the skills and physique of fighting are slow, but also the fighting mentality needs a growing process.

Everyone knows a lot about the rules in the ring, how many people know, how many people are prompted to start fighting, how far the other side is when starting fighting, and so on. The situation is relatively simple. As long as you don't violate the rules, you just have to beat the other side hard and knock the injured person down and kill him. If you don't violate the rules, you have insurance and medical care, regardless. You just need to be able to beat yourself. A few players in the ring are very good at repelling all kinds of behaviors that are not low-key or even low-quality. I think it has something to do with this. Their fighting ability is king, and moral cultivation and the like will not help to win or lose in the ring. For an inappropriate example, modern martial arts is like a four-wheel drive against a remote-controlled car obstacle course in the ring. The former is simple and faster than most remote-controlled cars, but the situation is much simpler.

There are also martial arts features.

Modern Wushu emphasizes management, while traditional Wushu emphasizes taking over, which is more intuitive. In the ring, either special wrestling or ground jujitsu, few people compete with their opponents. Basically, when there is a gap, they combine punches. There are many reasons why traditional martial arts pay attention to receiving strokes. One is that the light fist is very small, and it can't be prevented, but the arm control is better. You can see the skills of taking over in small glove competitions such as UFC. One is that in traditional martial arts, you will pull a lot of punches or push a lot of punches after playing, which are all things you have taken over, while in modern big glove martial arts, most of them stop after playing. Another is that in some cases, you don't have to really fight, so that the other side can't attack, just listen to others' hands. In addition, there are some other reasons, but it is always that traditional martial arts take over more than management, so pushing hands and listening are things that traditional martial arts will involve more or less.

Compared with modern Wushu, the combo of traditional Wushu seems a little weak. I know there are many combo skills in wing chun, but I see that more other martial arts are simple and simple, and most of them are skills to defeat the enemy, not to strike and defeat the opponent. Therefore, traditional Wushu is generally unexpected in attack and defense, and people who have not practiced it are likely to fall down at once. However, people who are prepared to practice are often prone to failure. Without combo practice, traditional practitioners may fall into temporary confusion or posture disadvantage. There are many videos of traditional martial arts playing modern martial arts. As a result, modern Wushu practitioners have good fighting and fighting experience, so they adopted such tricks, and the traditional school was defeated.

The video is a fight between a traditional folk boxer and a Sanda.

Giant thunder! Folk Xingyiquan master vs Sanda provincial team members

Obviously, traditional practitioners are always knocked out once or twice and then beaten.

I won't mention such things as strength. It's boring to talk too much about the inner power of myth. On the impact effect, we can't say that modern Wushu has no power. The impact of modern martial arts also has power. Just get through it. But the power of traditional martial arts is really mysterious and interesting, and I am personally interested.

Training differences have to be mentioned.

Modern Wushu is relatively simple in technical composition and can be trained more pertinently. The so-called endless simple skills combined with modern and efficient training mode can easily make people very capable of playing. Traditional Wushu pays more attention to the integration of practice and cultivation. While having the ability to fight, it is also necessary to explore the physical health after the battle. Combined with what I said before, traditional Wushu needs mentality and wisdom besides physical requirements in actual operation. So the training mode is very different. Traditional Wushu can be said to be educating people, while modern Wushu is fighting training in a strict sense.

So which is better or worse? What should I do?

I think the traditional martial arts is still relatively disadvantaged in fighting ability. Traditional Wushu wants to catch up with modern Wushu in fighting ability, so it can only adapt to the rule simplification technology, and then use modern scientific training technology to strengthen practice. At the same time, you should also pay attention to your own offensive and defensive characteristics. People won't take over for you easily, and management is hard to compare. So whether to improve management ability or strengthen management needs to be considered. If you don't combo, you will definitely be beaten badly, so you should practice the single stroke and the back stroke. At the very least, don't let yourself be overwhelmed and beaten there.

From the health point of view, the traditional Wushu routine is a good way to keep fit, and all joints of the whole body can move. After all, there are many actions and tricks. There will be more confrontation in modern Wushu. Confrontation is a double-edged sword, and pain is accompanied by the improvement of offensive and defensive ability. But ordinary fans will not be badly beaten. I've never heard of being really a fan of boxing dementia. Practitioners of modern martial arts wear protective gear to avoid injury, and punching sandbags is actually quite healthy.

This topic also asks a practicality. Personally, I think that technically, traditional martial arts will be more practical in dealing with daily conflicts. After all, it is based on this kind of thing. However, in practical application, it still varies from person to person. There are many confrontations in modern Wushu. When you meet the enemy, you will have a good spirit of confrontation, you will not be scared to be at a loss, and you will be able to hit your face quickly technically. With courage, you can think calmly about strategy and have the opportunity to use martial arts.

To sum up, the difference between them is: practicality varies from person to person. Traditional Wushu should not rest on its laurels, but modern things should be learned and introduced. Modern martial arts can't be proud, and traditional things have a lot of experience worth learning. Combining traditional and modern martial arts, he later stood on the world stage, such as Muay Thai and karate.

Only inheritance and innovation can lead to development. The two can be unified, and it is not good to look for differences blindly.
