Traditional Cancer is a Slow Evolution

Traditional The theory is that cancer evolves slowly as the body undergoes thousands of cell mutations. But new findings from the Sanger Institute, the UK's leading disease research organization, debunk the idea. It suggests that no matter how hard people try to stay fit and healthy, there is no guarantee that fate won't play a joke on them. It also explains why some people have no signs of cancer at all during a medical check-up, but are suddenly diagnosed with the disease months later.

Some cancers break out at night

Scientists at the Sanger Institute came to these conclusions by studying 750 defects, some of which are in line with the conventional theory that chromosome damage is the result of years of accumulation. However, at least 1 in 40 of the tumors did not fit the "standard pattern," and some of the chromosomes appeared to have been damaged overnight.

Dr. Campbell, who participated in the study, said, "The results surprised us. Inside a cell, chromosomes become fragmented after one or more explosions. If this cell starts to clumsily mend, sewing the fragments together in a haphazard way, this destroys the original DNA structure and provides for the rapid formation of cancer."

Dr. Campbell said, "The cell should have said, "OK, I give up," instead of splicing the chromosomes back together like expensive china. The cell tries to fix an irreparable thing and ends up creating a disastrous, fast-forming genome that allows cancer to form."

This type of "acute cancer" is particularly common in bone cancer, where the characteristic pattern of chromosome damage is evident in about a quarter of patients. Scientists are not yet sure what causes this chromosome "explosion," but suspected culprits include X-rays and sunburn. According to Dr. Campbell, "If we can understand the underlying cause, we may be able to prevent this cancer."
