Most of Wenshan Miao batiks are blue.

The most important dyeing raw material of batik is plant indigo, so most batik works we see are mainly blue. In fact, color batik has long been popular in ancient times.

Color batik

1987, archaeologists excavated a batch of Miao people's colored batik mourning clothes in a karst sarcophagus cave in Taohua Village, Pingba County, Anshun City, Guizhou Province, 2 1 km away, including a colorful batik pleated skirt with heron pattern, which is exquisite in workmanship and still maintains its true color, making it a rare treasure. It was later determined that these cultural relics originated in the Song Dynasty, more than 1000 years ago. It can be seen that the color batik art of Miao nationality in Song Dynasty is quite mature.

In addition, in 1965, people found valerian silk books with bird patterns in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes belonging to the Tang Dynasty caves 122 and 130. The existing three-color batiks in the Palace Museum and the "Tree Like a Sheep Wax Valley Screen" first collected by Masakura Institute in Japan belong to the color batiks in the Tang Dynasty.

After the Song Dynasty, batik technology was gradually lost in the northwest Central Plains, and finally passed down in the southwest mountains with the great migration of Miao people.

Guizhou is high in the west and low in the east. There are many plateaus and hills in this province. The unique geographical environment hindered the invasion of foreign enemies. The humid climate is also conducive to the growth of indigo. The ecological environment surrounded by mountains and rivers ensures people's self-reliance and protects traditional culture.
