Origin of the name
The Xia Dynasty was called "Yu Yue", also known as "Dai Yue", or simply "Yue". During the Spring and Autumn Period, the Yuyue people built a state centered around the area of present-day Shaoxing, which was called the "State of Yue". In the 25th year of Qin's reign (222 BC), the ruler of Yue was demoted and called Huiji County. In the Jin Dynasty, it was called the State of Huiji, and in the Southern Dynasty, it was the seat of Eastern Yangzhou.
Sui-Kaihuang nine years (589), was re-installed in the Wuzhou General Administration, the rule of Huiji County. From the first year of Daye (605), it was called Yuezhou, and thereafter the names Yuezhou and Huiji County were used interchangeably.
Southern Song Dynasty Emperor Zhao Jong took "Shao Yi Shi of Hong Huo, Xing Hundred Years of Pi Xue" meaning, in Jian Yan five years (1131) to change the name of Shao Xing, Yuezhou for Shao Xing Province, the origin of the name of Shao Xing, and has been used since then.
