Why traditional culture can't save modern China

The traditional culture centered on the teachings of Confucius and Mencius had played a great role in the development of feudal society in China, but in modern times, in the face of the invasion of Western capitalism, it suddenly did not work: not only could not stop the invasion of foreign invaders, and even the unity of the country could not be maintained. What are the reasons for this? I think the most important thing is related to its inherent defects - the lack of two basic elements of science and democracy in traditional Chinese culture.

Science is a system of knowledge about the laws of development of nature, society and thinking. It cannot be said that there is no germ of science in traditional Chinese culture, especially in military science, scientific thought is still very rich. However, on the whole, there was no scientific system of nature, society and thinking, especially the modern scientific system, in the feudal society of China. As a result, the rulers were neither able to use scientific theories as a guide to govern the country well, nor were they able to come up with scientific and effective security strategies to cope with the external environment, so they could only be in a passive position in the face of invasion by powerful enemies. Democracy is the pillar of modern society and the source of development power, but the traditional Chinese culture is not the status of democracy, I that is the country, the emperor said nine tripods, the ordinary people in the country is only the object of slaughter. In this way, the state has lost its foundation, and when internal and external threats come like a storm, the operation of the state is naturally untenable.

The intellectuals of the May Fourth period were the first to recognize this, and so they defiantly raised the banner of science and democracy in an attempt to change the situation, thus igniting the fire of national renaissance. But science and democracy are in fact different in nature: the science of the Western countries is only science of nature, while there is still no science of society; the democracy of the Western countries is only the democracy of the bourgeoisie, while there is no substantive democracy for the proletariat; and in the developed countries of the world where such science and democracy have been widely practiced, it is not possible to save the country from the dangers of the fire by engaging in such science and democracy in the colonial and semi-colonial countries. It will not be possible to save the country from the fire. Only under the guidance of the ideas of comprehensive science (including social science) and thoroughgoing democracy (broad-based people's democracy) can the goal of national independence, prosperity and development be truly realized. And such science and democracy are the science and democracy advocated by Marxism. That is why Mao Zedong said that since the Chinese people had learned the "new culture of Marxism-Leninism", the face of China had been transformed.

It is clear from this that traditional Chinese culture must be analyzed pragmatically and scientifically. First of all, we must fully understand its inherent defects - the lack of science and democracy, and through the efforts of the development of science and democracy to overcome and make up for these two major defects, so that the traditional Chinese culture really embark on the road of modernization, while opposing the attitude of retrofuturism; secondly, we should also be pragmatic to fully absorb the reasonable factors, and modernize it, so that it has a modern form, to oppose the historical nihilism. modern form, and to oppose the attitude of historical nihilism. In short, we can only strive to create a modern culture of contemporary Chinese characteristics with a high degree of science and a high degree of democracy under the leadership of the Chinese ****producing Party, so that we can truly promote the realization of the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation, national prosperity and people's happiness.
