Introduction to Traditional Grammar of Traditional Grammar

The term includes the writings of ancient Greek and Roman grammarians, Renaissance writers, and 18th-century canonical grammarians. It is difficult to summarize so many research methods, but linguists have always taken the term in a pejorative sense, i.e., to refer to research methods that are unscientific for the study of grammar: the analysis of language according to Latin without regard to empirical facts. However, many of the basic concepts used in modern research methods can be found in those early works; moreover, the study of traditional grammar, as part of the history of linguistic thought, is today attracting new attention. A striking example of the contemporary use of traditional grammar in our country is sentence drills, by which automatic responses to linguistic stimuli are achieved.
