Death in criminal law
Traditional death (comprehensive determination theory): refers to cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and loss of pupillary reflexes.
Brain death: permanent loss of function of the brainstem or the central system above the brainstem. (Irreversible)
Brain death is differentiated from a vegetative state:A vegetative state is one in which the brainstem is in a coma, severely damaged or in a state of sudden depression.
There are three grades of death:
1. Brain death, but there is still a heartbeat
2. Clinical death
3. Biological death, where all the cells are dead after 24 hours after the heart stops beating
