Is the couplet left or right?

Stick the couplets on the right.

Because couplets are divided into left and right directions, when pasting couplets, the upper couplet should be pasted on the right, the lower couplet on the left, and the left and right are divided by facing the gate or pilaster. The reason for posting this way is that the straight writing is from right to left, so reading couplets is also from right to left.

Taboos for posting couplets

First, don't paste the upper and lower parts wrong.

When pasting Spring Festival couplets, people often paste the upper and lower couplets in the wrong place. The key to distinguish the upper and lower couplets lies in the last word. The last word of the first couplet should end softly (three or four tones in Mandarin), and the second couplet should end with a flat tone (one or two tones in Mandarin).

When pasting couplets, the upper couplet should be pasted on the right and the lower couplet on the left, and the right and left should be distinguished by facing the gate or pilaster. The reason for posting this way is that the vertical writing is from right to left, so reading couplets is also from right to left.

Time to post Spring Festival couplets: According to folklore, Spring Festival couplets are actually immortals in the sky. When the Spring Festival couplets are torn up, they will report to the Jade Emperor about every household. It is best to put up Spring Festival couplets between 6 am and noon 12 on New Year's Eve, and tear up the old ones, that is, remove the old cloth and make new ones.
