A Brief Introduction to British Mathematician Augustus de Morgan
1, born in 1806.6.27, died in1871.3.3438+08;
2. He is a mathematician and logician;
3. The main contribution in logic research lies in the formulation of De Morgan's law and the basic work leading to the development of relational theory and the birth of modern symbolic logic or mathematical logic;
4. 1828, he was a professor of mathematics in the newly established University of London, except 183 1 ~ 1836, where he taught for five years. When he helped to establish the London Mathematical Society and served as its first president in 1866, his goal was to put mathematics on a more rigorous basis.
5. One of the early works, Arithmetic Elements (1830), is characterized by a simple and thorough philosophical exposition of the concepts of logarithm and quantity. In 1838, he defined and introduced mathematical induction to describe the methods that have been used in previous mathematical proofs but are not clear;
He pointed out the possibility of having an algebraic structure different from ordinary algebra. In trigonometry and bialgebras (1849), the geometric explanation of complex numbers (bialgebras here refer to the algebra of complex numbers) is given, and the concept of quaternion is put forward. He suggested using the slash symbol "/"to print scores, which made a useful contribution to mathematical symbols.
